Reviews Summary

Portsmouth Square is cherished for its authentic community feel and historical significance as the heart of Chinatown. Visitors appreciate the lively atmosphere, the chance to see locals engaging in traditional games, and the convenient parking. Some may find the park busy and note the presence of smokers or transient individuals, but many see this as part of its unique charm.

"Portsmouth Square is beloved to me. I think what people might be bothered by the most is the busyness of it. There’s locals taking up the benches to play card games, or kids skating on the bridge when they’re not supposed to. But for me, that’s what makes it charming. There’s a community here, and I can see it. If you want a quieter park near Chinatown, I would recommend St. Mary’s Square.

You can spot many skyscrapers from the park, especially the Transamerica Pyramid, 555 California Street, and the Salesforce Tower, making a great place for pictures. They seem so close from here (and they are; Transamerica and 555 are just a few minutes away by foot)! It’s also by the main Chinatown area. There isn’t a lot of nature, but there is lots of plaza space. A few historical landmarks here and there. They also have a playground and a garage beneath the park. Overall, 4/5."

"We came through this park on the Barbary Coast Trail walking tour. This is where the original San Francisco settlement was pre Gold Rush. Hard to believe there was shoreline where the Transamerica pyramid now stands. The monument to Robert Louis Stevenson here alludes a bit to the history, but mostly it is now seems like a social hub for elderly Chinese who like to gamble and smoke."

Jeff Meyer

"I went to this park with my RAMS group.
And it was a lot of fun.
I took some pictures of the event that
was going on there.
