I love doing this walk, and recently got into tracking my exercise. I see that their are orange markers along the dunes that start from the Sandspit entrance in MDO. What do they mark though? Miles? KM? Thanks for your help.

Reviews Summary

Sandspit Beach is lauded for its stunning, Hawaii-like beauty and vast sand dunes, offering a sense of natural wonder. However, visitors must be prepared for a steep hike to access the shore and be mindful of powerful waves and strong rip currents, making it less suitable for young children or those with mobility issues. The absence of dogs is also a notable drawback for some.

"One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen in California! It gives me Hawaii vibes! But be prepared to hike. It’s a quarter of a mile walk to the sand but an extremely steep drop to make it down to the water.. but climbing back up in the sand is a workout! So pack light and make sure everyone in you group is prepared. I don’t recommend for older people or pregnant women( we had both LoL)."

"Very gorgeous beach and a nice scenic trail to the beach. Was surprised by the large pounding surf and felt it was not the best location if you have small children with you. Other than that though it was wonderful and sunny the day we were there. My kids loved seeing the huge waves from the top part of the beach especially. Didn't stay as long as I'd like to buy still made some fantastic memories with my kids. I would recommend coming here on days the wave action is not so big. Can check this information online before coming."

"Update 2024: No dogs allowed, and I have no one to take with me on trips besides my dog. I want him to experience dunes by the beach, yet every dune along the coast bans them while allowing the most irresponsible humans. Very dissapointing to not be able to come back here.

Original: My new favorite beach in the area! Great place for a beach jog, lots of sand dollars and intact shells up the beach toward the less populous areas. Kinda hard to get to and likely less parking available during the busy summer. Also, it is about a 5 min walk to reach beach. As with all beaches in this area (and i mean all) there is a pretty steep drop near the point waves start to break and constantly shifting rip currents- don't go too far out until you know the area. I've been coming to this area since I was 5 and have had to fight my way to shore a couple times. All thst said, boogie boarding and surfing are possible here; check the surf forecast of course. No dogs, horses or bikes on this beach.

Seriously, just come out here and run down the beach in 70 degree weather. It's heaven."
