What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the quality and authenticity of the Tropic Lightning Museum, often comparing it favorably to larger institutions. The free admission and the knowledgeable staff are frequently highlighted as major positives. However, the process of obtaining a day pass for Schofield Barracks can be time-consuming and requires careful preparation.
"What a surprise to find such a nice museum here. They have exhibits on Wheeler Army Airfield, Schofield Barracks, and the Army’s history in Hawaii in general, focusing on the 25th. Infantry Division. The building itself is a historic building, having been made out of lava rock by prisoners and at one time functioning as the post’s library. You can’t beat free admission, either!"

"This was so authentic and real and the quality was similar what I've seen at Smithsonian. Be sure to read the notebooks of first person accounts. Wow! Better than the Pearl Harbor Museum. Highly recommend.
I hear the first person accounts are online. If you have the link please let me know."

"It is an excellent museum of information, displays, and immersion. The 25th Infantry wing has era by era displays of uniforms, tools, gear, and info. There is even a scale display Vietcong tunnel, complete with rats and GI flashlight.
The museum host is very friendly and knowledgeable.
Additionally, outside has a handful of tanks and vehicles for the viewing.
If you are a regular Joe/Jill civilian, you will need to get a day pass. Be sure to have your real ID, social security card, or passport. Additionally, be sure to have vehicle registration info. Be polite and to the point when conversing with the guards. They don't have time for rudeness or a lot of talk."
