Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Saratoga Monument for its historical significance, free admission, and rewarding panoramic views from the summit. The bas-relief plaques and general statues offer engaging historical context. While the 188-step climb can be challenging, most find it worthwhile. Some wish for more interpretive signage at the base, but overall, it's considered a beautiful and inspiring landmark.

"The Saratoga Battle Monument is a 155 foot stone obelisk that commemorates the American victory over the British at the Battle of Saratoga. The monument is situated high on a high hill that was once the site of Burgoyne’s camp in the battle. The monument has sweeping views of the nearby valley.
There are 188 steps to the top of the monument. Inside there are 16 bronze bas-relief plaques that tell the story of the American Revolution. Some of the stories on the plaques are propaganda of sorts, but they are still very interesting works of art and give insight into how history is told. The view from the top is pretty good and you can see a long way on a clear day.
On the outside of the monument there are four niches made life size statues of the generals who won at Saratoga. Facing north is Horatio Gates awaiting the approaching British army. Facing east is General Phillip Schuyler who looks toward his nearby estate. Facing west is Colonel Daniel Morgan whose rifle prevented the escape of the British. The niche that faces south is left intentionally empty. This is done for Benedict Arnold who helped the American Army at Saratoga, but later betrayed his country. It is a way to pay tribute to him, without actually remembering him.
The park rangers at the monument were extremely helpful in explaining everything about the monument. Check the Saratoga National Park’s website for hours or call ahead and ask. Currently, the inside of the monument is open on the weekends. Admission is free! Definitely, a must see if you’re touring the battlefield. This is an awesome landmark for some great views and interesting history."

"The Saratoga Monument is a striking and historic landmark, well worth a visit if you’re in the area. The setting is peaceful and evocative, surrounded by rolling hills that invite reflection on the significance of the site. Climbing the tower is a memorable experience — though the 188 steps can be a bit challenging, the panoramic views from the top are rewarding. The monument itself is well preserved, and the informational plaques offer interesting context about the Battle of Saratoga. I would have appreciated more interpretive signage at the base, but overall it’s a beautiful and inspiring place to spend an hour."
