Cake, anyone?🍰 Take a closer look at ‘Cake’ (2012) by Beverly Semmes (@beverlysemmesstudio) with our Visitor Experience team member, Michaela. The whimsical clay sculpture uses the repeated motif of a pot or vase to create this unconventional form. ‘Cake’ is part of ‘Generations: 150 Years of Sculpture,’ on view at the Nasher through August 24, 2025.

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise SculptureCenter for its excellent, free contemporary art exhibitions within a striking industrial space. The curated shows, both upstairs and in the intimate basement, are consistently highlighted as impressive. While some find the basement a bit claustrophobic, the overall experience is highly recommended for its artistic merit and accessibility.

"This repurposed industrial building is a gem among new luxury skyscrapers. The massive space upstairs makes for some epic installations. The basement may feel claustrophobic to some but there’s enough room to go with a stroller (there’s an elevator as well). We loved the recent exhibit surprisingly lurid images from Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is a must visit and it’s absolutely free."

Craig Mussman

"The architecture of the space though small is very unique and interesting. And the exhibits though limited feel well-curated. I particularly liked the Scott Burton exhibit which was inspired by the landscape and vegetation of the Ramble in Central Park. I plan to return once the exhibits change.

Admission is always free."

Joe S

"SculptureCenter is a gallery center for sculpture artists and free to visit! High ceilings, raw beams and brick walls give the space an open, industrial feel. There's a basement space that's quite striking and a small outdoor patio with a few benches, gravel and cement walls that open to the sky, giving a view of the LIC skyline. Very cool spot! They sell books and some products in their little shop and bathrooms are in the back."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Sculpture at SculptureCenter

SculptureCenter is dedicated to showcasing contemporary sculpture, a medium that has evolved dramatically over the centuries. Unlike traditional galleries that might focus on historical pieces, SculptureCenter champions emerging and established artists who push the boundaries of what sculpture can be. This means you'll encounter a wide range of materials, from classic bronze and stone to unconventional elements like found objects, digital media, and even performance. The focus is on new commissions and innovative exhibitions, ensuring a fresh and dynamic experience with each visit. Instagram

The space itself plays a crucial role in how the art is perceived. The repurposed industrial building provides a raw, expansive canvas. High ceilings, exposed beams, and brick walls create an atmospheric backdrop that complements the often monumental or conceptually driven sculptures. This industrial aesthetic is a deliberate choice, offering a stark contrast to the delicate or complex nature of the artworks, and enhancing their impact. Reddit

Visitors often remark on the thought-provoking nature of the exhibitions. Whether it's a whimsical piece like Beverly Semmes' 'Cake' Instagram or a more conceptually dense installation, the art at SculptureCenter invites contemplation and discussion. The curators skillfully select works that engage with current social, cultural, and artistic dialogues, making it more than just a viewing experience but an intellectual one. Reddit

Navigating the SculptureCenter Experience

SculptureCenter is designed to be an accessible and engaging art space. The main exhibition area upstairs offers a grand, open environment perfect for large-scale installations. Here, you can truly appreciate the spatial relationships between the artworks and the architecture. The sheer volume of the space allows for pieces to breathe and command attention. Reddit

Downstairs, the atmosphere shifts. The basement level provides a more intimate and sometimes dramatic setting for exhibitions. This contrast between the expansive upstairs and the contained downstairs allows for a varied viewing experience, catering to different types of artistic expression. An elevator ensures that both levels are accessible to everyone, including those with strollers or mobility challenges. Reddit

Beyond the art, SculptureCenter offers practical amenities. There's a small shop where visitors can find art books and unique items, and restrooms are conveniently located. The free admission is a significant draw, making it a popular choice for a quick cultural stop or a more in-depth exploration of contemporary art in Long Island City. Reddit
