You can find this spooky asylum of ashes a couple hours travel west of Portland, Oregon. Tillamook Lighthouse’s haunting presence is visible from Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park. Kinda surprised more writers haven’t created ghost or horror stories or based on the location. What do you think? #oregon #travel #lighthouse #spooky #storytime

Ever heard the spooky tales of Terrible Tilly? There’s many haunted tales of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, but I think the real tale is of these zombie sea lions that run down the stairs to ward off any intruders. Can we start a story about them? The Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is located about a mile from shore on the rugged Oregon Coast near Ecola State Park. Locals and lighthouse keepers of Te...

Terrible Tilly 🌊 📍Tillamook Rock Lighthouse Operated 1881 to 1957 1.2 miles from shore near Cannon Beach Footage taken March 21st, 2023 in anticipation of a volunteer cleanup crew arriving March 25th. Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the dramatic coastal scenery and the iconic, albeit distant, view of the 'Terrible Tilly' lighthouse. The hiking trails offer rewarding vistas, though some can be challenging. The main drawback is the inability to get close to the lighthouse, necessitating good zoom lenses for detailed viewing.

"Lush nature on the shore, beautiful walk and 2 different trails to get to the same point, a fairly easy and accessible one or the one with the best views that takes you by the cliff shoreline, but you can't actually get to the light house. Some of my pictures are a 30x zoom."

Ruben DeCleyn

"The view is average, much better if you have some binoculars or a telephoto lens. The photo shown below if the light house is from my Samsung Galaxy s23 Ultra at 10x optical zoom. For reference. Don't expect to have a great view with the naked eye. There is a 5 dollar fee for day parking. There is a short loop to walk around, and there are also a couple trailheads from the main parking area. A gorgeous area!"

Ben

"The first time I visited, I took the Clatsop Trail which is pretty narrow. It was very muddy this time, so I took the Canon Beach Trail to be safe. The Canon Beach Trail is about 95% uphill and it did not feel that way to me when I took the Clatsop Trail. I went up for the sunset and it was pretty dark on the way back down, so keep that in mind. There are large rocks on the trail which can be tripping hazards, especially in the dark, so watch your step and bring a flashlight."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of 'Terrible Tilly'

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, affectionately or perhaps fearfully nicknamed 'Terrible Tilly,' has a storied past steeped in the harsh realities of maritime life on the Oregon Coast. Constructed between 1880 and 1881 under incredibly challenging conditions on a remote sea stack, the lighthouse was a vital beacon for ships navigating the treacherous waters. Its isolation and the relentless Pacific storms earned it its notorious moniker. TikTokInstagram+1

The lighthouse operated for 76 years, from January 21, 1881, until its light was extinguished on September 1, 1957. The decision to decommission it was due to the increasing difficulty and cost of maintaining the structure and its light, especially with advancements in navigation technology. Despite being abandoned, 'Terrible Tilly' remains a powerful symbol of resilience and the enduring spirit of those who manned such isolated posts. Instagram+1

Today, the lighthouse stands as a silent sentinel, a popular subject for photographers and a source of local lore. While inaccessible to the public, its imposing presence continues to captivate visitors, evoking tales of its turbulent history and the wild beauty of the Oregon Coast. TikTokInstagram

Accessing Views: Trails and Vantages

Since direct access to Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is impossible for visitors, the experience revolves around finding the best viewpoints from the mainland. The most popular areas for viewing are Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park. From these locations, the lighthouse appears as a distant, yet striking, structure on the horizon. TikTokInstagram

For those willing to hike, trails originating from Tillamook Head or within Ecola State Park offer more dramatic perspectives. The trails can vary in difficulty, with some being narrow, muddy, and steep, especially the one that hugs the cliff shoreline. It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear and be mindful of tripping hazards, particularly if hiking in low light conditions. Reddit

Many visitors recommend bringing binoculars or a camera with a strong telephoto lens to truly appreciate the details of the lighthouse and its surroundings. The effort to reach these vantage points is often rewarded with breathtaking coastal scenery and a unique perspective on this historic landmark. InstagramReddit

Wildlife Encounters at the Coast

The waters and rocky outcrops around Tillamook Rock Lighthouse are teeming with life, adding another layer of fascination to any visit. The most commonly reported wildlife sightings are sea lions, which often congregate on the sea stack itself. Their presence is a frequent topic of discussion among visitors, adding a wild, almost mythical, element to the scene. Instagram+2

Beyond the sea lions, the coastal environment supports a variety of seabirds that make their home on the cliffs and in the surrounding waters. While not always the primary focus, their calls and aerial displays contribute to the rich sensory experience of the Oregon Coast. Instagram

Visitors should always maintain a respectful distance from wildlife and be aware of their surroundings. The rugged nature of the coastline means that while wildlife is abundant, interactions are best observed from a safe and designated viewing area. Instagram
