What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Airport Mesa is celebrated for its spectacular sunset views and powerful vortex energy, offering a memorable experience for visitors. While parking can be challenging and crowds significant, especially at sunset, the panoramic vistas and unique atmosphere make it a highly recommended stop in Sedona. Some visitors found the area less serene than expected due to noise, but the natural beauty is consistently praised.
"We went twice! First the day we came in to see the sunset but it was cloudy so we just saw a shadow and the 2nd time the evening before we left and what a spectacular sunset! Abundant Vortex energy. Easy parking at the top for $3. The lower area has only about 6 spaces and is free. Worth it! Oh and that same night we came back for amazing star gazing."

"Cool loop hike, with good views of Sedona and the surrounding rock from the trail. It's a nice way to see the area from a higher viewpoint while on a hike. Very urban, you don't ever feel you are really "in nature" but I would still recommend it as a way to get a quick visual tour of the area. Another nice place to watch the sunset without having to go very far. You can just hike up as far as you want and then sit down on the grassy hillside (some parts are more tree-covered that others)."

"If you’re trying to see the sunset at the mesa, I’d recommend arriving early. The lower parking fills up and is very small. The hike from the here is easy and there are handrails to help you reach the top. The upper parking is much larger and is $3. There is a gravel area across from this parking where you can see the sunset, too. I’d recommend this view for anyone that is not able to walk too far. If you park at the gravel lot, you can walk a moderate trail to the mesa, which can be found at the front right side of the lot, if you are facing out towards the city.
Be aware that both of these viewing spots get CROWDED. I was expecting it to be quieter as I had heard about people going out there to meditate/ experience the vortexes. Very few people are doing that. It is mostly people talking loudly, children screaming, people on speakerphone calls, etc. We went both at the sunset and at sunrise to try to have a serene experience, but it was just not possible. If you are there to just see the views it is great, but you will not have a quiet time in nature. I would’ve enjoyed this more if I had known beforehand."

Experiencing the Sedona Vortexes
Other notable vortex sites in Sedona include Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon, each with its own distinct energetic qualities. While Airport Mesa is easily accessible and offers incredible vistas, some find the crowds can detract from a deeply serene experience. For those seeking a more solitary encounter with the vortex energy, visiting during sunrise or off-peak hours is highly recommended. Regardless of your beliefs about vortexes, the natural beauty and the sense of peace that many find at Airport Mesa are undeniable.
When visiting Airport Mesa, it's important to be mindful of the environment and other visitors. Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile desert ecosystem. Many people come to Airport Mesa for meditation, yoga, or simply to sit in quiet contemplation. The combination of the stunning landscape and the unique energetic reputation makes Airport Mesa a compelling destination for a wide range of visitors.
The Airport Loop Trail: A Scenic Walk
While the trail is considered moderate, there are some uphill sections, particularly as you approach the summit of Airport Mesa. Handrails are available in some steeper parts, assisting hikers. The loop offers various points to stop, rest, and soak in the scenery. You can choose to hike the entire loop or opt for a shorter walk to a viewpoint that suits your energy level. The trail is popular for both hiking and enjoying the expansive vistas, making it a great option for a quick visual tour of the Sedona area from a higher vantage point.
It's worth noting that the Airport Loop Trail is quite 'urban' in its setting, meaning you're never truly far from civilization. However, the panoramic views and the unique geological features make it a worthwhile experience. For photographers, the trail offers numerous opportunities to capture the dramatic landscapes, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Remember to bring water, especially during warmer months, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
Capturing the Perfect Sedona Sunset
To maximize your sunset experience, arriving early is crucial. The parking lots, both the free lower lot and the paid upper lot, fill up quickly, often an hour or more before sunset. If you miss out on parking at the top, there are other viewpoints along the road, or you can hike from alternative trailheads. Be prepared for crowds; many people share the desire to witness this daily natural wonder.
Beyond the sunset, Airport Mesa is also fantastic for stargazing due to its elevation and relatively dark skies away from the immediate town lights. If you plan to stay after dark, a headlamp or flashlight is essential for navigating the trails safely. Remember to bring layers of clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly after the sun sets.
