Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the unique experience of seeing the Rio Grande's humble beginnings and the stunning mountain vistas from Stony Pass. However, the journey to the actual source is challenging, requiring a capable vehicle and a strenuous hike, and the pass itself can be impassable early in the season.

"The distant viewpoint is off the road, with a little information! There is a path down to the water(along fence line), however, very steep ( more difficult- higher altitude-be mindful).

Many people have spotted the Rio grande river, not many have seen where it begins!!!"

"Coming from Silverton, stop and enjoy the view at Stony Pass. Then continue on down the trail and stop where the unassuming Rio Grande crosses under the trail. It is hard to believe the mighty river begins its long and winding journey in this beautiful spot."

Brandon Cravens

"You can either go to the Rio Grande resevoir or to the head of the stream that is marked on Google maps. I went to both and I must say it is quite a journey to get to the headwaters marked on Google Maps. You have to travel all the way up to Stoney Pass and then walk a while on the Colorado Trail just to get there."

The Journey to the Source

Reaching the true Rio Grande Headwaters is an adventure in itself. While the Rio Grande Reservoir offers accessible beauty, the actual source marked on maps is a more challenging destination. It requires navigating rough gravel roads, often necessitating a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4, especially to reach Stony Pass. Travelers have noted that the road conditions can be unpredictable, with Stony Pass sometimes remaining impassable well into the summer due to snow. Reddit

Once you reach the vicinity of Stony Pass, the final approach to the marked headwaters involves hiking a section of the Colorado Trail. This hike can be steep and demanding, particularly at higher altitudes. It's crucial to be prepared for rugged terrain and to check recent trail conditions before embarking on your journey. The reward is witnessing the very beginning of a river that will eventually flow for over 1,800 miles. Reddit

Many visitors find the experience of seeing the river's humble origin profound. It's a stark contrast to the powerful river it becomes downstream. The unassuming crossing where the Rio Grande emerges is a quiet, beautiful spot that many people miss if they only visit the reservoir. Reddit
