Observation Point

The traditional Weeping Rock trailhead is closed due to a rockfall. The most common access is now via the East Mesa Trail. This requires driving outside the main park entrance to a trailhead that can be challenging to access, especially in wet conditions. Some visitors opt for a shuttle service to the East Mesa Trailhead.

While there isn't a direct park shuttle to the Observation Point trailhead, private shuttle services operate to the East Mesa Trailhead, which is the current primary access point. Booking in advance is recommended.

The drive involves unpaved roads that can become very muddy and difficult after rain. High-clearance vehicles are often recommended. If conditions are dry, it's more manageable.

The strenuous hike up from the canyon floor via the Weeping Rock Trail is currently not an option due to trail closures. The East Mesa Trail is the primary route.

Observation Point is a famous viewpoint within Zion National Park, Utah. There are also viewpoints with similar names in other parks, but the most renowned 'Observation Point' for hiking is in Zion.

Via the East Mesa Trail, the hike is approximately 7 miles roundtrip and can take 3-5 hours, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the viewpoint.

The hike via East Mesa Trail is considered moderate to strenuous due to its length. While the initial part through Echo Canyon is relatively flat, the last mile involves a significant elevation gain.

The views are spectacular! You get a commanding, panoramic vista of Zion Canyon, looking down on Angels Landing and the entire valley. It's often described as one of the best views in Zion.

The East Mesa Trail is long, and the final ascent can be challenging for very young children or those with limited mobility. However, families in good physical condition can complete it.

Essential items include plenty of water (3-4 liters per person), snacks, sunscreen, a hat, sturdy hiking shoes, and a camera to capture the incredible scenery.

Early morning offers softer light and fewer crowds, ideal for capturing the grandeur of Zion Canyon. Late afternoon can also provide beautiful golden hour light.

A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive canyon views. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details or photographing Angels Landing from afar.

The main viewpoint offers the iconic panorama. Explore slightly to the sides for different angles and perspectives of the canyon and Angels Landing.

Drone usage is restricted in Zion National Park, including at Observation Point, to protect wildlife and preserve the visitor experience. Always check current park regulations.

The trail itself offers beautiful desert landscapes and glimpses of the canyon walls. The approach through Echo Canyon provides unique rock formations and textures.
