What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unparalleled, expansive views from Observation Point, often deeming them the best in Zion, surpassing even Angels Landing. The East Mesa Trail offers a less crowded alternative to main park hikes. However, the journey to the trailhead can be challenging with limited parking and rough roads, and summer hikes are extremely hot with minimal shade.
"A relatively easy trail that ends with a great view. Some nice viewpoints along the way. Saw some wild turkeys and the return trip. Trailhead parking is very limited and the dirt road back to the trailhead can have some deep ruts. There is a shuttle that runs to get you back there."
William J. Charnigo
"The trail itself isn't too hard or impressive; You can get some good views along the way but most of the trail is like a walk through a semi-sparse forest.
That being said, the views at Observation Point are arguably the best in Zion canyon, better and higher than Angel's Landing. The point isn't exactly "unknown" but the amount of people here was significantly lower compared to the more popular hikes, which is nice. Could not recommend taking this path more highly!"
Tyler Norris
"Must come early! I stayed at Zion Ponderosa but still opted to drive over taking the shuttle. Only a few legal parking spots are available. Also check the weather as the roads can get quite muddy and difficult to drive in, let alone hike.
Otherwise the hike is flat with a few sandy bits and dips closer to Observation Point. For a family with a wide age and capability range it was great, albeit a little long for the youngsters.
Views are unbeatable, even looking down at Angel's landing from a higher elevation. Just always exercise caution! There are a lot of sudden drops and I encountered someone that lost a shoe getting a bit too close to the edge."

Navigating the East Mesa Trailhead
Parking is extremely limited, with only a few designated spots. This is why arriving very early, ideally before 8 AM, is crucial to secure a space. For those without suitable vehicles or who prefer not to deal with parking, shuttle services are available from nearby resorts like Zion Ponderosa Ranch. These shuttles can be a convenient and stress-free way to reach the trailhead, though they do come with an additional cost.
It's also important to check the weather conditions before heading out. The dirt road can become muddy and difficult to navigate, or even impassable, after rain. Planning your trip with these access considerations in mind will significantly improve your overall experience.
The Observation Point View: A Zion Icon
Unlike the crowded experience at Angels Landing, the East Mesa Trail route to Observation Point tends to be quieter and less congested, even though the view is arguably superior. This makes it a fantastic option for those seeking a more serene appreciation of Zion's grandeur. The trail itself, while not as dramatic as some other Zion hikes, offers pleasant scenery, including glimpses of wildlife like wild turkeys.
When you reach the point, remember to exercise caution as there are sudden drops. While the views are incredible, safety should always be the priority. The unobstructed vistas make it a prime spot for photography, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.
Summer Hiking: A Word of Caution
If you must hike in summer, starting before dawn is essential. This allows you to complete a significant portion of the hike before the sun reaches its peak intensity. Carrying ample water (more than you think you'll need) is non-negotiable, and wearing sun protection like hats and sunscreen is vital. Some visitors have reported their vehicles becoming heavily coated in dust and dirt from the unpaved road, adding to the overall challenging experience.
For a more enjoyable and safer experience, spring and fall are highly recommended for this hike. If visiting in summer, consider prioritizing other Zion trails that offer more shade and water features, or be exceptionally well-prepared for the heat.
