Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Cumberland Island's untouched natural beauty, wild horses, and historical ruins, calling it a 'gorgeous' and 'untamed' escape. The lack of development is a major draw, offering a true sense of wilderness. However, the need to be entirely self-sufficient with food, water, and trash management, along with the prevalence of biting insects during warmer months, are common points of caution.

"While this is very informative on the mainland, you have to purchase a ferry ticket to go to the main Cumberland shore. The gift shop with well maintained, the staff was super friendly, and there was some things to learn about sea turtles and animals nearby. There is lots of Island history and museums on the mainland. They chop down all of the oak trees on the island to make boats, what do they use to enslave Africans to farm cotton. Very informative."

"Beautiful island, untouched grounds. Wild horses, armadillo, crabs, sharks teeth. The dungeons ruins are beautiful. We loved learning about the history behind the island. Would love to come back and camp some day! We went for the day trip, not enough time to see it all."

Heather Yowtz

"Plan your visit! Arrive at 8am if boarding the 9am boat, buy your souvenirs and pay for entry to the national park. Buy in advance your tickets online. Pack a backpack with all food, water supplies as well as bug spray. Wear comfy shoes and be prepared to walk. There are random benches and picnic tables, also a restroom with large table indoors if needed (labeled the laundry area). North end of the island restricted so unable to see church. We stayed on the south end and walked the beach, marsh and grounds searching for the horses. Was able to see 8 of them and all appeared healthy and happy! We even toured some of the tent loops that looked private and enjoyable. Have fun and be thankful!"
