Stanley Lake under the Milky Way felt unreal. I was shin-deep in the freezing water, lining up the reflection of the stars with the mountains. At first it was just cold... then I felt something brushing my feet. I thought it was weeds, but when I shined my light down, my legs were crawling with leeches. Luckily, none of them fully latched on. Still, standing there in the icy water with the Milky ...

Reviews Summary

Stanley Lake is lauded as a magical, cinematic destination with breathtaking Sawtooth Mountain views and stunning reflections. Visitors praise its beauty for photography and outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and water sports. However, some note the extreme cold of the water, potential crowds during peak season, and the importance of being prepared for wildlife and rugged terrain.

"Stanley Lake is one of Idaho’s most magical places. With the Sawtooths reflecting off the water and the ever-changing light, it feels peaceful and cinematic all at once. It’s the perfect location for adventurous couples — every photo here feels timeless and full of heart."

"The Sawtooth National Forest holds some stunning and jaw-dropping scenery.
This lake among 1000 others is well worth your effort and time to see and explore.
Not all trails are for everyone. Know your ability and the terrain before you go. It's a very unforgiving place if you get into a situation and need help.
The forces that it took to create these landscapes were astronomical. From the crags of the alpine peaks and forests to the valley floor, you will have plenty to do and see.
Just remember, this area is home to some amazing wildlife from bear, moose, mountain lions, and elk to the wolves, bobcats, and squirrels that you really need to be aware of your surroundings.
Give them their space and don't approach them. You may think you could outrun them, but I guarantee you can't.
Be safe and keep all food in sealed containers, carry bear spray just in case you need it, and pack out what you pack in.
As always, leave no trace, leave it better than you found it, and enjoy 😉."

"I did a one night camping trip on July 13-14 and stayed in the non-reserved section closest to the lake. (I shared my site with a lovely family) It is the last left turn before reaching the reserved campground. It does have access to the lake via a short trail and some folks camp on the beach although they aren’t designated spots. (It was very crowded, I’ve never seen that many folks there before but still better than Redfish) I immediately went and rode my bike to the Elk Meadows loop, then paddle boarded in the early evening. The next day I paddled in the morning, took a short bike trip to bridal veil falls (although I didn’t go all the way), and then kayaked before leaving.

The facilities were clean at the beach parking lot, the park ranger I spoke to had lots of great anecdotes on where to bike, and the water was glorious. Very calm in the morning and evening, but a bit choppy mid day. FYI- a large section of the beach on the west end was lost due to the earthquake in 2020, so the Lakeside trail no longer connects with the Stanley Lake Trail. The views of McGowan Peak from the lake and the trails are just magnificent. Be sure to check out this gem. If hiking or biking be safe and aware of surroundings as there have been bear sightings in the area. Definitely my favorite camping spot in Idaho. 👌"
