Reviews Summary
Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center offers public skating, hockey leagues, and figure skating lessons, but visitor experiences are mixed. While some appreciate the availability of activities and adequate parking, others cite significant issues with facility maintenance, restroom cleanliness, and particularly, inconsistent skate rental availability and customer service.
"Overview:
I grew up playing hockey here and used to genuinely love this place. Unfortunately, the facility now appears mismanaged, and the customer experience has steadily declined.
From broken door handles and poor building / bathroom upkeep to an empty pro shop and unprofessional skate counter behavior, service and maintenance have clearly suffered. My most recent visit revealed even deeper issues.
Skate Rental Failure:
I arrived at 12:45 PM for open skate and requested size 12 hockey skates. I was handed two left skates. When I asked for a right one, I was told it wasn’t available, I politely asked if she could double check as I stood on one skate—then I was asked if I could just wear two lefts. When I refused, the staff was unhelpful.
I was then informed that no men’s hockey skates larger than size 9 were available.
I was asked to “make it work,” even though I wear a size 12. That’s a three-size difference and an unreasonable ask and I was treated as though I was being difficult or picky.
Safety Oversights:
I escalated to the pro shop, where the staff was equally unprofessional and arrogant. The only alternative offered was a size 14, which I tried, but it was loose even when fully tightened—was very unstable at the ankles - a clear injury / safety hazard.
Their skate inventory excuse? “People break the skates.”
Replacing damaged gear is part of running a skate facility. Skates are essential to your core offering.
Refund Denied & Poor Behavior:
Despite being unable to provide usable skates 45 minutes later, I was denied a refund—twice. The staff member refusing the refund was playing with LEGO bricks while I stood there. Whether on the clock or not, that sends a message about how seriously this place takes customer service and image.
In response to my initial complaint, the business was defensive and I was accused of making an employee cry. I assure you I did not. I walked away calmly to watch my kids skate. I was respectful in all my interactions. My 76-year-old father was present and would’ve spoken up if I wasn’t. Other guests also witnessed the exchange.
I stand by the composure I displayed in person—even if my written complaint expressed the understandable and blunt frustration.
Response & Labor Concerns:
Your team later said the LEGO employee was off the clock. That raises Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) concerns and still doesn’t excuse the lack of accountability. It also appears unprofessional. If staff can’t help a guest, they should escalate the issue—not dismiss it—so the visit can be salvaged.
Facility Condition & Broader Issues:
I filed a BBB complaint not based solely on this visit, but due to a clear pattern of neglect. Insulation is falling, flooring is deteriorated and poses tripping hazards, exit handles are broken, rule signage is torn, and core skate sizes are unavailable. That’s unacceptable.
I understand budget and facility pressures. But with visible sponsorships, private lessons, hockey leagues, party hosting, open skate, and a restaurant, it’s hard to believe revenue is the issue. This goes beyond HVAC struggles in Texas heat. Online reviews show this is not an isolated experience and this facility was managed properly in the past with less foot traffic.
A Missed Opportunity:
Had someone simply said, “We’re short on sizes, sorry, here’s a refund,” I would’ve walked away understanding and said nothing further. Instead, I got defensiveness and zero ownership of the failure.
Even a free return pass wouldn’t help if sizes remain unavailable. I was there before open skate began—during non-peak hours.
A well-run business would use this moment to reassess skate inventory, employee training, or refund policy. That didn’t happen here.
Simple fixes could prevent this, like asking for skate size and type at check-in before taking payment. Not everyone can wear just any style of skate—some need hockey skates for medical or comfort reasons.
I’m not seeking a refund or a pass. I hope this feedback drives meaningful change—for loyal guests like me and for the future of this rink."

"Nice facility. Bleachers around the rinks but also had an upstairs viewing room above at least one rink which was good for families with younger children. Clean restrooms. No concessions but had vending machines with a good selection of snacks & drinks. Pretty easy to get to and parking seemed more than adequate."

"Unfortunately this was suppose to be a special treat my sons took me out on we arrived paid were given skates. I hadn't even got on the ice or my skates on and my second son arrived five minutes in and said they were saying they were closed. I went to talk to the front desk at which time I was told yes they were closed now for hockey and she wouldn't even give us a refund but gave us a pass to come again. I explained that she had just let us in and she acted as if she was confused about when we got there we were the only two people there and she not only took our money but also gave us our skates. Really unfortunate 😕. We ended up going to the galleria in the mall and had a great time unfortunately it cost way more there, and we had already paid here too. Terrible management. At least give people back there money if you can't provide the service they pay for. Terrible after reading other reviews I see this has been a common occurrence."

Navigating Skate Rentals and Availability
To mitigate potential disappointment, it's strongly recommended to call the facility in advance to confirm skate size availability, especially if you wear larger or smaller than average sizes. Arriving early for open skate sessions might also increase your chances of securing the correct fit. For those who frequently skate or have specific fit requirements, bringing your own well-maintained skates is the most reliable solution.
Facility Condition and Maintenance
Despite these concerns, some visitors have had positive experiences, noting clean restrooms and a good upstairs viewing area. The ice itself is described as 'alright' by some, with the caveat that sharp blades can make a difference. It appears that while the core function of providing ice for skating is met, the upkeep and aesthetic presentation of the facility could be improved to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Hockey and Skating Programs
While the programs themselves are a draw, the facility's condition and management can sometimes overshadow the sporting activities. However, for individuals focused solely on participating in hockey or learning to figure skate, the availability of these programs is a key offering. It's worth noting that feedback regarding league management or coaching quality is not extensively detailed in the provided reviews.
