What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the spiritual ambiance and the intricate architectural beauty of temple complexes, finding them to be havens of peace. However, some reviews highlight issues with staff behavior and the management of facilities, suggesting a need for improved visitor experience in certain areas.
"Such a wonderful experience at the temple. Only temple where i saw Panchamukhi Ganesha as you enter. Displays of many mythological characters such as Kubera, vishwa karma, Varuna, parashurama."

"At best a mixed bag. The behavior of most of the non-priest people inside is downright rude and boorish. On a recent visit- upon entering through the sole door provided, one sees a lot of take out boxes piled rather high. Upon being asked the sole lady standing nearby does acknowledge that these are ‘prasadam’. Upon opening the box there is a fair amount but no spoons/forks/napkins are visible. Upon being asked, of another male attended, there is just a blank stare and a ‘no’. Further a large ‘dining room’ is visible just beyond- and upon entering it- three or more males- actually rather rudely indicate that the door should be locked.
the crux of the matter appears to be that the folks inside are certainly not of this country and have taken over the interiors for their own purposes.
It would have been quite easy to just add a small poster to the effect ‘please use the take-out prasadm as there is no spoons/folks/napkins’- and a similar ‘please be advised that this room is reserved by so and so. Please use this number with questions’.. As a place of public worship - the conduct of the males inside and the temple management should be investigated, as the behavior is certainly not what would be seen at any other US public place."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Access to temple complexes varies greatly by location. For major sites like the Karnak Temple Complex in Egypt, public transport and taxis are common options from nearby cities like Luxor. For Indian temples, local buses, auto-rickshaws, and ride-sharing apps are frequently used. Always check the specific location's accessibility and recommended transport methods beforehand.
Parking availability differs significantly. Larger complexes often have dedicated parking lots, though they may incur a fee. Smaller, more localized temples might have limited street parking or designated areas nearby. It's advisable to research parking options for your specific destination.
Many prominent temple complexes are well-connected by public transport. For instance, the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam is accessible via local buses and trains. Researching local bus routes or train stations near your target temple is crucial for planning a public transport journey.
Best routes depend on your starting point. For example, the Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Delhi is located in Mayur Vihar. For historical sites like the Karnak Temple Complex, routes from Luxor are well-documented. Using GPS navigation apps is highly recommended.
Some larger temple complexes or historical sites offer shuttle services, especially from parking areas or nearby transport hubs. The Ancient City in Thailand, a temple complex, offers a free shuttle. Inquire locally or check the official website for such amenities.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry fees vary widely. Some temples are free to enter, while historical sites or major religious centers may charge admission. For example, the Karnak Temple Complex has an entrance fee. It's best to check the official website or local information sources for current pricing.
For popular tourist destinations like the Karnak Temple Complex, booking tickets in advance can save time, especially during peak season. For smaller, local temples, advance booking is usually not necessary. Always check the specific requirements for your chosen site.
Opening hours differ significantly. Many temples have specific timings for darshan (worship) and general visiting hours, often with a midday break. The Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Delhi has timings from 5:30 AM to 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Always verify the current hours before your visit.
Photography rules vary. Some temples allow photography in certain areas but prohibit it inside the main sanctum. Drones are often restricted or require special permits. Be sure to observe signage and ask if unsure.

Many major temple complexes offer guided tours, which can greatly enhance your understanding of the history and significance. Official guides are often available for hire, or you can join group tours. Some visitors find them invaluable for historical context.
Facilities can include restrooms, drinking water stations, and sometimes small shops selling religious items. Larger complexes might have information centers or cloakrooms. However, some reviews mention a lack of basic amenities like spoons with prasadam.
Accessibility varies. While some modern temples are designed with accessibility in mind, older historical sites may present challenges due to uneven terrain or stairs. It's best to check specific accessibility information for the complex you plan to visit.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Some larger temple complexes have canteens or restaurants offering vegetarian meals, often including prasadam (blessed food). However, the quality and availability can differ. One review noted issues with prasadam distribution and lack of utensils.
Generally, bringing your own food is permissible, but it's important to be discreet and clean up after yourself. Avoid eating in the main prayer areas. Some temples might have designated areas for eating.
Temple eateries usually serve simple, vegetarian South Indian or North Indian cuisine, depending on the region. Prasadam is often distributed, which can range from sweets to savory snacks.
Yes, most temple complexes, especially those in towns or cities, are surrounded by numerous restaurants and eateries offering a variety of cuisines. This is often a more reliable option for diverse dining choices.
It is highly advisable to avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food in the immediate vicinity of temples, as it is considered disrespectful. Many areas around temples are strictly vegetarian.

Look for areas with intricate carvings, grand entrances (gopurams), towering structures, and serene courtyards. Drone shots can offer unique perspectives of large complexes like Srirangam. The Karnak Temple Complex is renowned for its massive columns.
Yes, photography is often prohibited inside the inner sanctums of temples. Drones are usually not allowed without special permission. Always check for signage or ask officials about specific restrictions.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography, with softer shadows and a warmer glow. The 'golden hour' can make the architecture truly shine.
Tripod usage policies vary. Some temples allow them, while others restrict them to prevent obstruction or damage. It's best to inquire locally or check the venue's guidelines.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is useful for capturing both wide architectural shots and details. A wide-angle lens is great for grand structures. A prime lens can be good for low-light interiors if photography is permitted.
