If you want the perfect short backpacking trip in Alaska this is it! This is Tonsina Point, a 2 mile hike in Caines Head State Recreation Area near Seward, AK. While many people continue hiking down the beach at low tide all the way to Caines Head (which I’ve done a few times and highly recommend), this short and sweet route gets you the same views without needing to worry about the tides. The h...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Tonsina Point for its breathtaking natural beauty, serene rainforest trails, and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The beach offers stunning Resurrection Bay vistas, and the chance to see eagles and otters is a major draw. Some note the trail can be rough with roots and rocks, and recommend hiking poles. The $5 parking fee is also a point of mention. InstagramReddit

"Tonsina Point, and by extension Tonsina Creek Trail, is a quieter part of Ressurection Bay and quite pleasant to experience. By the end of September, most of the salmon has spawned and died but a few remained, futilely swimming upstream. One Bald Eagle's nest, if you look hard enough, can be found in one of the closest pinetrees to the right when standing on the beach and facing south-east. There's likely to be more based on how many eagles were seen

If you take the trail to this point, there's plenty of beautiful views of Ressurection Bay through the dense rainforest. Tons of mushrooms and moss growing seemingly everywhere. Overall, very easy to get to and beautiful to see"

Tyler Norris

"Awesome hike! Bring hiking poles though. Parts were a little rough with large rocks and tree roots."

Cheryl Ware

"Did this hike on a dreary, overcast day. Was a little eerie on the way out. Saw plenty of humans on the way back. Appreciated that the wood boardwalks had netting on it to prevent it from being slippery. Beautiful spot! Hike was pretty mellow."
