What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Jolly Roger Inn & Pier are varied. While some guests praise recent renovations, friendly staff, and excellent beachfront location with convenient access to dining and fishing, others have expressed significant concerns about past cleanliness issues and property maintenance. The value for money is considered fair by some, particularly for the location.
"Our trip to the Jolly Roger Inn was a deeply disappointing experience, and I feel compelled to share a strong warning with anyone considering booking here. While the staff were undeniably friendly and helpful, even quickly processing a full refund, their excellent service simply couldn't compensate for the shocking state of the property.
Upon entering our room, we were immediately hit with an overpowering smell of mold and mildew, which was incredibly off-putting and concerning for our health. The visual condition of the room was equally as bad, with paint bubbling and peeling from nearly every surface.
The sleeping arrangements were particularly egregious. The bed sheets were visibly dirty and stained, and the mattress beneath them was in a similar unkempt state. What was advertised as a "queen bed" turned out to be a rusted, stained, and incredibly uncomfortable pull-out couch. This is completely unacceptable for any accommodation, let alone one charging premium rates.
Beyond the room itself, basic amenities were lacking. There was no readily available ice; instead, we were instructed to bring a tiny bucket to the front desk to get it filled, or, conveniently, we could purchase a full bag. Most alarming, however, was the non-functional smoke detector in our room, a serious safety hazard that should never be overlooked.
It's clear that the owners of this inn have made zero investment in the upkeep or maintenance of the property. For $300 a night, this level of neglect and cheapness is absolutely unacceptable. There are many other accommodations in Topsail that offer far superior value and a safe, clean environment for the same price. Save yourself the frustration and disappointment; do not stay here."

"I was a little hesitant about this place at first given some of the negative reviews on cleanliness, but my fisherman husband really wanted to try it so we gave it a chance. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. We inspected our room upon arrival and it both looked and smelled clean. The room had all the necessities including a broom for sand and extra blankets. I was told that the Jolly Roger did renovations over the winter and it was clear that the room had been painted and there was not even a hint of mold. The staff were always accommodating and friendly - a little direct, maybe, but always nice. Tasha in particular was wonderful. She recommended our room and offered us a free late check out. The fishing and beach access couldn’t be beat. Our balcony overlooking the surf was lovely and we were able to get to the beach itself the moment we walked out our door. There are a number of great restaurants and an ice cream shop within walking distance which only added to the inn’s convenience and charm. Last thing I’ll say - I think the price was very fair. $170 for a weekend night and then $120 for a week night. Not bad for a beachfront rental. I’d be willing to try this place again."

"The only issue for service was when ordered food from grill they did not use gloves. There was a box of gloves by grill but did not use them. Other than that everything was great."
