What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Dam Site Historic District for its beautiful lake views, rich history, and peaceful atmosphere. Many highlight the knowledgeable staff, particularly Will, who enhances the museum experience. The CCC-era architecture and the availability of diverse lodging options, from casitas to camping, are also frequently mentioned positives. Some minor points of dislike include the presence of stray cats and limited on-site dining.
"There is lodging here, but it is part of the larger Damsite Historic District. This area is the place to come if you want to learn about the history of the Elephant Butte Dam and how it was built. There's a museum here, and if you are lucky, Will will be there because he can answer all your questions. That man is a treasure trove of information.
This Historic District is a great place to picnic, walk around and look at Elephant Butte Lake, and just relax in the beautiful New Mexico outdoors. If you want to stay overnight, you can rent cute casitas or a luxurious but reasonably priced room in the lodge. If camping is more your style, you can stay in the RV or do dispersed camping on the beach or above it all on the Winding Road.
So much of this area was improved by the CCC in the 30s and 40s (prior to World War 2), and you can still see the fruits of their labor today.
It's a really interesting area, beautiful and historic. Your trip to Sierra County and Truth or Consequences/Elephant Butte is not complete without a visit here."
