What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Adirondack Railroad offers a range of experiences, from the magical Polar Express to scenic fall foliage rides. While many praise the festive atmosphere and the hard work of volunteers, some reviews highlight concerns about train maintenance, including air conditioning and bathroom facilities, as well as the value for money on certain ticket packages.
"The Polar Express ride was a mixed bag. Overall, it was done well. BUT........
The information given states that there is a 30 minute show and then you board the train. In our case, a 7pm show with a 7:30 departure. Except at 7:22 our train left the station. You can't be late/ thinking you'll skip the show or you may be watching the train head off into the distance.
Oddly, the gift shop had no post-ride opportunities. Plenty to buy but only when you arrive so don't put off a purchase thinking you'll have a chance after the ride.
Biggest grievance? Santa snubbed us - twice. I paid for two first class tickets but my wife and I brought no kids. Santa came onboard and took pictures with the kids. Did not even acknowledge us or ask if we'd like a photo opportunity. I paid just like anyone else and not having children with us is NOT an excuse to deprive us of the full experience. My wife was truly disappointed.
Beyond that the staff were nice and the swag was quality. There were games, dancing, and even joke telling. The brief ride is nice culminating in arrival at Santas workshop.(Best seen on the after 4pm trips due to the lights) If you don't have kids, remember not to be irritated by the yelling, running up and down the aisle, and general excited "kid behavior". It's for them and once they get loaded up with hot chocolate and sugar cookies all bets are off."

"Did the Fall Gateway ride up to Old Forge. It was wonderful! You get a brochure with information on the historical sights along the way. Most of the sights seem to be on the western side, though a few are seen from the eastern. We sat in first class on the way up, and on the way back, we stood in the open air car. It was thrilling! We got to enjoy the sights, smells, and brisk breeze as the train thundered back down the hill. Next time, we plan to book seats in the glass dome, with the diamond level. You have to book these tickets in early May though."

"It was obvious staff were trying to achieve a well-run Polar Express experience. We were disappointed that the PA system for the skit did not work well, the train started late, the PA system on the train was muffled, and we got back an hour later than expected. The 3 staff in our Car 1 were energetic and friendly. Our 2 grandsons DID enjoy the experience."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the experience is fantastic for kids, parents should be aware of the tight schedule for shows and departures. Arriving early is non-negotiable to catch all the pre-train activities. Also, note that Santa's main focus is typically on the children, so manage expectations if you're hoping for individual adult photo opportunities. Despite potential minor issues like A/C or bathroom conditions, the sheer delight on a child's face makes it a worthwhile holiday adventure.
💰 Budget Travelers
While the value of some premium packages has been questioned, the Fall Gateway ride in a standard car can offer a more affordable way to experience the scenic beauty of the Adirondacks. Focus on the journey and the views rather than expensive add-ons. The dedication of the volunteers often means that even a standard ticket provides a memorable experience.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Consider booking a glass dome car for unparalleled panoramic views, ideal for landscape photography. For action shots, a faster shutter speed is crucial. Be mindful of other passengers and always seek permission before taking close-up photos of individuals. The contrast between the historic train and the natural beauty of New York makes for compelling imagery.

The Magic of the Polar Express
While the experience is primarily designed for children, many adults find joy in the nostalgic atmosphere and the dedication of the volunteer staff. However, some reviews suggest that Santa's interactions might be more focused on younger guests, which can be a point of disappointment for adults seeking a more personal encounter. It's also important to note that the show and boarding times can be quite precise, so arriving early is essential to fully enjoy the pre-train entertainment.
Key elements of the Polar Express experience include the festive onboard entertainment, the quality of the 'swag' (souvenirs), and the overall atmosphere. The arrival at 'Santa's Workshop' is particularly enchanting on evening trips when the lights are visible. Despite some minor operational hiccups mentioned in reviews, the core magic of the Polar Express often shines through, making it a memorable holiday outing for families.
Scenic Journeys: Fall Gateway and Beyond
For those seeking panoramic views, the glass dome cars are a highly sought-after option, providing unobstructed vistas of the Adirondack landscape. These premium seats, however, require booking well in advance, often by early May, due to their popularity. The Adirondack Railroad also offers other routes and special event trains throughout the year, catering to various interests, from historical tours to themed excursions.
Travelers have praised the comfort of the first-class cars, which often include complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and the option for pre-ordered food. The volunteers are frequently commended for their hard work and dedication, especially when operating under challenging conditions. Whether you're seeking a festive holiday adventure or a picturesque journey through the Adirondacks, the Adirondack Railroad provides a unique perspective on the region.
Navigating Potential Challenges
Another area that has drawn criticism is the condition of the bathrooms. Reports of no running water, reliance on gallon jugs for flushing, and a general lack of cleanliness have been noted. Given the number of passengers on some trains, these issues can significantly impact the overall experience. The food service has also been a point of contention, with some finding the portions to be extremely small and not worth the cost.
Despite these criticisms, the dedication of the volunteers is consistently highlighted. They are often described as working hard and doing their best to ensure passengers have a pleasant journey, even when facing operational difficulties. It's recommended to manage expectations regarding amenities and to confirm specific details about the train's condition and services when booking, especially for non-holiday excursions.
