Using Amtrak for the first time in a long long time
I've been riding Amtrak a whole lot recently and I've been loving it. There's the train fan in me and all the sights but I've really been using it as a utility more than for leisure. I took the Accela in summer and the Northeast regional up and down from NY 🚆 Took the Maple…

Amtrak from Buffalo to....somewhere?
I want to take a week off in the end of September or in October and I want to take Amtrak...somewhere. I don't know where I want to go, just somwhere that is only 8 to 10 hours away-ish, one way. I kind of want a place that is off the beaten path, not NYC, Boston, etc. Anyone…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Adirondack Railroad offers a range of experiences, from the magical Polar Express to scenic fall foliage rides. While many praise the festive atmosphere and the hard work of volunteers, some reviews highlight concerns about train maintenance, including air conditioning and bathroom facilities, as well as the value for money on certain ticket packages.
"The Polar Express ride was a mixed bag. Overall, it was done well. BUT........
The information given states that there is a 30 minute show and then you board the train. In our case, a 7pm show with a 7:30 departure. Except at 7:22 our train left the station. You can't be late/ thinking you'll skip the show or you may be watching the train head off into the distance.
Oddly, the gift shop had no post-ride opportunities. Plenty to buy but only when you arrive so don't put off a purchase thinking you'll have a chance after the ride.
Biggest grievance? Santa snubbed us - twice. I paid for two first class tickets but my wife and I brought no kids. Santa came onboard and took pictures with the kids. Did not even acknowledge us or ask if we'd like a photo opportunity. I paid just like anyone else and not having children with us is NOT an excuse to deprive us of the full experience. My wife was truly disappointed.
Beyond that the staff were nice and the swag was quality. There were games, dancing, and even joke telling. The brief ride is nice culminating in arrival at Santas workshop.(Best seen on the after 4pm trips due to the lights) If you don't have kids, remember not to be irritated by the yelling, running up and down the aisle, and general excited "kid behavior". It's for them and once they get loaded up with hot chocolate and sugar cookies all bets are off."

"Did the Fall Gateway ride up to Old Forge. It was wonderful! You get a brochure with information on the historical sights along the way. Most of the sights seem to be on the western side, though a few are seen from the eastern. We sat in first class on the way up, and on the way back, we stood in the open air car. It was thrilling! We got to enjoy the sights, smells, and brisk breeze as the train thundered back down the hill. Next time, we plan to book seats in the glass dome, with the diamond level. You have to book these tickets in early May though."

"It was obvious staff were trying to achieve a well-run Polar Express experience. We were disappointed that the PA system for the skit did not work well, the train started late, the PA system on the train was muffled, and we got back an hour later than expected. The 3 staff in our Car 1 were energetic and friendly. Our 2 grandsons DID enjoy the experience."
