What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Caspersen Beach is a beloved spot, especially for its abundant shark teeth and unique black sand. While recent hurricanes have impacted access, requiring longer walks and limiting facilities, visitors still find the beach beautiful and the hunting rewarding. Many appreciate the quieter, more natural atmosphere post-storm.
"The beach was really hit hard by the hurricanes last year(2024). You can't drive to this beach anymore like you use to, you have to walk now about a mile from the nearest parking lot. People are still coming here searching for sharks teeth, fishing, walking, or just hanging out at the beach for the day."

"The first time I made a visit to Caspersen was in 2021. My most recent visit was today. The way the hurricanes have devastated this area is beyond comprehension. The road that lead to the parking lot & restrooms is completely gone, washed out. I couldn't find the old "Caspersen Beach" sign but, I might not have walked down far enough. I love this beach & although it's a bit bittersweet, I always will love it. It is a longer walk to get to the beach now but, that's okay. There were so many turtle nests too! That made me happy, now they have more land to lay their eggs, so that's a good way to look at it. Nature always takes back what is Hers. The water is beautiful & I still managed to find some shark teeth & shells! Not as many as I would like, but just another reason to visit again! Pick up after yourself & be respectful to the wildlife & oceanlife. We only have one Caspersen 🩷"

"The park/beach experienced a tremendous reset from recent hurricanes. Entry road to parking lots wiped out, trees and vegetation gone, expanding the open sandy shoreline. Walk in if you wish, about a one mile trek. Lately, the Venetian Waterway Bike trail is open to the Beach. Previously it was blocked with security fencing at the little aluminum bridge. That fencing taken down allowing entry directly from the bike trail. No water or bathrooms working so be prepared. Beach is much more quiet and peaceful, no more cars. I kind of like it better the way it is now."

The Allure of Shark Tooth Hunting
To maximize your chances, aim for low tide, as this exposes more of the shoreline where teeth tend to accumulate. Bringing a specialized sifter or a small shovel and bucket is highly recommended. While many teeth are small, the thrill of discovery is immense, and finding a larger or more intact tooth is a significant reward for your patience.
Remember to be respectful of the environment and other beachgoers. While the hunt is exciting, the natural beauty of Caspersen Beach itself is also a major draw. The experience is not just about the teeth, but the entire process of beachcombing and enjoying the coastal environment.
Navigating Caspersen Beach Post-Hurricane
Visitors now typically park at designated areas and embark on a walk of about a mile to the beach. Alternatively, the Venetian Waterway Bike Trail offers a more direct route for those who prefer to cycle or walk from that access point. This change, while inconvenient for some, has led to a quieter, more peaceful beach experience, with fewer cars and a greater sense of natural preservation.
It's crucial to be prepared for the lack of facilities. There are currently no working restrooms or water stations directly at the beach. Visitors should bring all necessary supplies, including water, snacks, and any personal items needed for a comfortable day. Despite these challenges, the beach remains a beloved spot for its natural beauty and shark tooth hunting opportunities.
The Unique Appeal of Black Sand
The black sand creates a striking visual contrast, especially when juxtaposed with the clear blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It adds an element of surprise and intrigue for visitors who may not expect such a unique beach environment in Florida. This distinctiveness makes Caspersen Beach a memorable destination for both casual beachgoers and photographers looking for something out of the ordinary.
While the black sand itself is a visual treat, it also plays a role in the beach's popularity for shark tooth hunting. The darker color can make it easier to spot the fossilized teeth against the sand, enhancing the overall hunting experience. It's a natural phenomenon that contributes significantly to the beach's charm and allure.
