Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Roman Nose State Park for its beautiful canyon scenery, unique natural springs, and historic lodge. It's a popular spot for camping and hiking, with pet-friendly campgrounds. However, many express disappointment with critically low lake levels impacting fishing and water activities, inconsistent operating hours for amenities like the restaurant and pool, and the shower token system. Reddit+4

"One of our favorite places to camp!! Hiking, fishing, and even a swimming pool in the summer. They also have horses to ride. It's beautiful and when we have gone its always been well maintained. Tent sites, RV and cabins available. We have our fall trip already planned!!"

Annie Sterkel

"We made reservations for 3 nights. We get here and can’t find an office to check in at. Find our way to our campsite and start exploring. There is no lake to speak of, water is so low you see the ground and weeds. The beautiful waterfall in the picture, the road going to it has been closed. The pool, #1 you have to pay to use, #2 it is only open on the weekends, we are here mid week. Found the lodge and asked when you check in for camping, she said, oh you’re good. The restaurant wasn’t open either. The shower you have to purchase tokens for, and each token last 3 minutes.
To say the least, we are extremely disappointed. The pictures show a beautiful lake, waterfall, pool and restaurant that we will not be able to Partake in. Oh yeah the general store was closed the day we arrived."

Patricia Cook

"I hadn't been there in years. My mom's family used to have family reunions there, and I hadn't been in the lodge since then (1977).
Same lodge, but updated. Nice, with a local flair about the Cheyenne/Arapaho tribes. The dining room has changed a lot, but was nice.
The lakes are dry, just a small channel going through them. Dam broke on the small one and then the large one failed.
Don't count on fishing.
The golf course looked to be in excellent shape. It's unique in that you're playing over and beside canyons. If your ball goes way back in the rough, leave it. Let the snakes have it, and drop another.
It has one of the nearest polls in the state, feed by natural springs."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Geology and History

Roman Nose State Park is carved into a beautiful canyon landscape, a rare feature in Oklahoma. This unique terrain was shaped by erosion over millennia, creating dramatic red rock cliffs and formations. The park's history is deeply intertwined with the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, whose ancestral lands encompass this area. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a significant role in developing the park in the 1930s, constructing many of its iconic structures, including the lodge and bathhouses, which have been preserved and repurposed. TikTokInstagram+1

Visitors can learn more about this rich heritage at the lodge, which features exhibits reflecting the local Native American culture. The park's natural springs are also a significant historical and ecological feature, providing a consistent water source that has been vital to the region for centuries. These springs feed into the park's water features and contribute to its unique ecosystem. TikTokInstagramReddit

The park's geological features are not only visually stunning but also offer a glimpse into the area's past. The canyons provide a sense of seclusion and adventure, while the springs offer a refreshing natural element. Understanding the history and geology enhances the appreciation of Roman Nose State Park as a truly special destination. TikTok+1

Water Activities: A Mixed Bag

Roman Nose State Park offers a variety of water-related activities, but it's crucial to be aware of the current conditions. The park features two lakes, Lake Watonga and Lake Boecher, which historically supported fishing, kayaking, and paddle boating. However, recent reviews and social media posts indicate that the lakes have suffered from critically low water levels due to dam issues and drought. This has significantly impacted fishing opportunities and the usability of larger watercraft. TikTokReddit+1

Despite the lake issues, the park boasts natural springs that remain a consistent attraction. These springs are known for their cold, clear water, making them a refreshing spot, especially during warmer months. Some videos highlight these springs as a unique feature of the park. Additionally, the park has a swimming pool, often fed by these natural springs, which provides a reliable option for cooling off. However, be aware that the pool may have an entrance fee and limited operating hours, typically on weekends. TikTokInstagramReddit+2

For those planning a visit with water activities in mind, it's highly recommended to check the park's official website or call ahead to get the most up-to-date information on lake levels and the operational status of watercraft rentals and the swimming pool. This will help manage expectations and ensure you can make the most of your visit. TikTokReddit

Camping and Cabin Stays

Roman Nose State Park provides diverse lodging options, including tent campsites, RV sites, and duplex-style cabins. The campgrounds are noted for being pet-friendly, allowing visitors to bring their furry companions along for the adventure. TikTokReddit+1

The cabins are described as clean and well-kept, offering concrete driveways and outdoor spaces with picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. They are situated within walking distance of the lodge and kayaking areas, making them a convenient base for exploring the park. While generally comfortable, some guests suggest bringing your own pillows and extra bedding for enhanced comfort, as the beds may not be the most luxurious. Reddit

When booking, it's important to note that amenities like shower facilities operate on a token system, with each token providing a limited time. The restaurant and general store may also have variable hours, so planning to bring some of your own food is a practical tip for a smoother stay. TikTokReddit+1
