What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Wells Barrens Preserve for its serene, expansive grasslands and comfortable sandy trails, making it an 'undiscovered gem' for birdwatchers and nature lovers. However, the lack of restrooms and the presence of ticks are noted drawbacks, along with the disappointment for dog owners as the preserve is not dog-friendly.
"(4/24/25) I really enjoyed this hike. I discovered this trail network through my AllTrails app. Trailhead parking lot fits about 20 vehicles, I was the only car there today. These trails travel through wide open grasslands and many sections of the footpaths contain fine-grain beach sand which was very comfortable and cushioning to hike on. Part of the trail passes by a large area of charred earth from a fire in 2018. No public restrooms here. Tons of different bird species throughout my hike here, which made it enjoyable listening to all the birdsongs. I finally saw a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (woodpecker) for the first time, using my Merlin Bird ID app."

"Great place for less common shrub/grassland birds like the field and grasshopper sparrows. Prescribed burns are done here to prevent woody overgrowth, you'll notice the dry smoky smell that's typical of these types of preserves. Lots of shrubs and grasses surrounded by more wooded areas. I counted around 30 species of birds, a few deer and other small woodland creatures. Some of loop is more mowed/traveled than others. I would recommend staying out of tall grass if possible and if not, make sure to do frequent tick checks, wear light colored socks/pants so you can quickly spot them. Throughout my trek I found around 10 ticks on my socks. I was 1 of three people there before 10am. The other 2 people were picking blueberries which are plentiful here."

The Unique Ecology of Wells Barrens
The preserve is particularly noted for its carnivorous plants, with purple pitcher plants being a highlight for visitors in early April. This adaptation is crucial for survival in nutrient-poor sandy soils, as these plants derive essential nutrients from insects. The open grasslands also provide crucial habitat for ground-nesting birds and specialized insects, making it a vital area for biodiversity conservation. Observing these adaptations in their natural environment is a truly fascinating experience.
Visitors will notice that parts of the trail pass through areas affected by past fires, such as the one in 2018. This is a natural part of the ecosystem's cycle, and observing the regrowth showcases the resilience of nature. The sandy trails themselves are a unique feature, offering a comfortable and cushioning hiking experience compared to more compacted earth paths.
