"It's a very small structure, but still cool to see when you think of its history."

Eric

"The Mount Wood Cemetery sits at a very quiet and solemn area, high above the city. It is also across from the Mount Wood overlook, that is the castle itself. I didn’t enter or walk through the graveyard due to time constraints, but the entrance looked very etiquette in design. The buildings, graves and other structures appear sturdy and clean. The entire area looks well maintained, with active grave keeper on-duty. There are few visitors during weekdays, so it is little to not busy at all here. For those who had family or loves ones buried here, this is one of the most peaceful resting places you can give to someone who have passed, in Wheeling. May they rest in peace. 🙏"

Instagram

Over the years, the cemetery faced periods of neglect, leading to a state of disrepair. Exploring the Mount Wood Tunnel

The Mount Wood Tunnel, built in 1904, was once a significant piece of infrastructure for the PA Rail Line. Measuring over 1205 feet long, it was renowned for its challenging construction, including a sharp 40-degree turn near its center that made it impossible to see light at the other end. This engineering feat was a testament to the era's ambition in transportation development. Instagram

Unfortunately, the tunnel is no longer passable from one end to the other due to partial collapse or blockage over time. While you can no longer traverse its full length, the entrance itself remains a point of historical interest. Seeing the imposing opening of the tunnel evokes a sense of its former grandeur and the industrial spirit that shaped Wheeling. InstagramReddit

For history buffs and urban exploration enthusiasts, the Mount Wood Tunnel entrance offers a unique photographic opportunity and a tangible link to Wheeling's railway heritage. It stands as a silent monument to a bygone era of transportation and engineering. Instagram
