Reviews Summary

Grindstone Neck Golf Course is celebrated for its stunning coastal scenery and unique, old-school 9-hole challenge. While the undulating fairways can be rough, the greens are consistently praised for their excellent condition. It's a memorable course that golfers often want to play again, especially for its picturesque location and demanding layout.

"As advertised. Beautiful old school 9-holes between two coasts. Scenery and location (there's not many other golf options nearby) makes it 5 stars. Postage stamp greens in good but not great condition. Hard undulating fairways that are a mix between grass, sand and stones. One par-3 and one par-5. You need to hit it long and reasonably straight and control the distance on your short irons to score here. You won't have trouble getting on the course. You will pay a lot more to ride, but the course is a lovely walk."

"Worth the trip to Winter Harbor. Fun track, would play it again. Would play it a lot if I lived nearby. Fairways have some rough spots, but that is to be expected in coastal Maine. Greens were in excellent shape. It's a fun walk, even in soupy fog."

David

"Very rough course, walking or riding, there's not a flat spot to be found. Fairways have little grass and more moguls than a ski slope. The greens were in great condition but getting to them was an adventure. There are some nice views but for me just not worth it. Nine holes with cart I paid $54."

The Unique Character of Grindstone Neck

Grindstone Neck Golf Course is a classic, old-school 9-hole layout that stands out for its rugged coastal charm and challenging terrain. Unlike manicured modern courses, it embraces its natural environment, offering a truly unique golfing adventure. The fairways are famously undulating, often described as a mix of grass, sand, and stones, demanding a precise ball strike and good course management. This isn't a course where you can simply blast away; it requires thoughtful play and an appreciation for the game's history.

The greens, however, are a different story. Despite the challenges of the fairways, they are consistently lauded for being in excellent condition. These 'postage stamp' greens are small and demand accuracy, rewarding players who can control their approach shots. The combination of difficult fairways and precise greens makes scoring here a true accomplishment. It's a course that tests your all-around game, from driving to putting.

Beyond the golf itself, the location is a major draw. Situated between two coasts, the course offers spectacular views of the water and surrounding islands. Many reviewers highlight the scenery as a primary reason for their enjoyment, making it a memorable experience even if your score isn't perfect. It's a place where the natural beauty enhances the golfing challenge, creating a destination that golfers often want to play again and again.

Navigating the Terrain and Conditions

Visitors to Grindstone Neck Golf Course should be prepared for a course that is as much about the journey as the destination. The undulating fairways are a defining characteristic, meaning very few lies will be perfectly flat. This can make approach shots and even fairway wood shots tricky, as the ball might sit unevenly. Some reviewers have noted that the fairways can be quite rough, with less grass and more natural terrain, especially during dry periods or droughts.

Despite the fairway conditions, the greens are consistently praised. They are often described as small, 'postage stamp' sized, and in great shape. This means that while getting to the green might be an adventure, putting on it is usually a pleasure. Players need to focus on accurate iron play to get close to these challenging targets.

When planning your visit, consider the weather. While coastal Maine offers beautiful scenery, it can also bring fog and wind. The course is described as a 'lovely walk, even in soupy fog,' suggesting that the experience is enjoyable regardless of minor weather inconveniences. However, if you're sensitive to rough terrain, be aware that the fairways are a significant part of the course's character.
