Beginner friendly backcountry near Winter Park

Iโ€™m headed out on a trip to winter park for a little over a week, getting plenty of turns in on the resort, but Iโ€™m curious if there is any mellow tours in the area. Iโ€™m from New England and a decent snowboarder, but I have only done a handful of days on my splitboard inโ€ฆ

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the profound solitude and quietude of Vasquez Peak Wilderness, making it ideal for those seeking an escape from crowds. The dispersed camping opportunities are a major draw, offering a primitive and peaceful experience. However, the lack of dramatic vistas early on and the rough road conditions can be drawbacks for some.

"The number of star ratings for hikes is very subjective. In this case, the hike was pretty easy, climbing a service road. The backpacking trip was just under 4 MI one way with about a 1,000-ft elevation change. There wasn't a lot to see by the time we stopped for the day but it was a quiet place to camp and then hike out on the next day. There are NO VISTAS or overlooks from the trailhead for more than 4 MI up the service road."

Anthony Ricco

"Nice dispersed camping spots along road 7. Most cars and higher clearance vehicles can make this. Great hike up to the back side of Vasquez Peak. You can't summit from this side."

Garret Sletten

"Nice, but rough roads."
