Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently rave about the spectacular, almost surreal beauty of Maple Pass Loop, especially during the golden larch season. The panoramic mountain views, alpine lakes, and vibrant fall colors are frequently cited as highlights. However, the overwhelming popularity means parking is a significant challenge, often requiring very early arrival or long walks from the roadside.

"This is one of my favorite, top five hikes I’ve done. We did the maple pass loop counterclockwise which I would recommend doing again. It is a very continuous climb this way. Moderate to challenging and difficulty throughout. The views are simply spectacular. Once you emerge from the forest onto the Alpine areas, it is truly incredible with views of glaciers, Alpine, lakes, and waterfalls. The descent is equally spectacular with green meadows. Betrayal was extremely popular and parking is at a premium. We arrive before 7:30 AM on a Saturday in August and we got one of the last remaining parking spots at the trailhead. By the time we were off the trail at noon, there was no parking within at least a half a mile of the trail with both sides of the road line by cars."

"Winter snow has arrived to Maple Pass! Hiked to Lake Ann (~5 miles round trip). Took about 2 hours. Parked on the side of Hwy20 since I didn’t have snow tires to get into the parking lot. Due to the continued stream of hikers, the trail is packed down nicely, but there are areas that go above the knee off trail. Quite an adventure."

Stacy Whitehead

"During larch madness, the Heather-Maple Pass Loop is pure gold—literally. The sun was out, the views were spectacular, and the mountains were showing off their deciduous conifers. It's less of a hike and more of a strut through an alpine treasury. A perfect, dazzling day."
