What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Stonewall Jackson Shrine a poignant and tranquil historical site, especially appreciating the free admission and the informative signage detailing General Jackson's final days. Some note the very limited hours for interior access to the plantation office, which can be a point of disappointment if not checked in advance. Despite this, the peaceful grounds and the historical weight of the location make it a worthwhile stop for those interested in Civil War history.
"Amazing place! Felt like a Twilight Zone episode where. A little old man was sweeping the floor when we arrived and told us the entire story. What a pleasure and what a cool place! All free too! 👌👏"
Aaron “Spike” Bender
"Confederate Lieutenant General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was mortally wounded on May 2, 1863, after the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was accidentally shot by his own Confederate pickets while reconnoitering the field after dark.
After his left arm was amputated at a field hospital, Jackson was evacuated 27 miles to Guinea Station, Virginia (then a vital railway hub), to await transport to Richmond for recovery.
Due to a sick patient in the main house of the Fairfield Plantation (a farm that used enslaved labor), Jackson was placed in the small, separate plantation office building. He died here eight days later, on May 10, 1863, from complications including pneumonia. His legendary final words were: "Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees." His death was a devastating blow to the Confederacy, which General Robert E. Lee famously lamented as losing his "right arm.""

"Staffed hours are VERY limited. Unstaffed half the year, and open weekends in the summer. The grounds are available 9 to 5 otherwise. Allow 15 to 30 minutes."
