"We went to the opening art show tonight. As an arts group - this place is fantastic.
BUT… tonight was a hot mess - in our opinion. Too crowded. So crowded. We wondered what the max capacity for people was? It was packed. Is there a capacity for safety? What if something happened? Really… what is the fire marshal’s recommended capacity? Just a question.
You could not see the work… some were three high on the walls, maybe more in some spots, and the displays - floor displays - were clustered with groups - hanging out - not budging - it seemed like cliques… not too friendly. You could actually see the work BUT you couldn’t take it in. Or even ask or talk about it.
People pushed through. Some artists seemed busy with friends or each other - blocking views - or so it seemed - gossiping amongst each other. You got bumped into and then were met with indignant looks. One artist said she couldn’t even get near her work.
We’ve been to other shows and they were fluid and pleasant. You could visit and had space. Usually two floors… tonight only - one.
This was really a waste of our time and seemed more like a vanity night out for a clique of friends and associates or whoever was on their mailing list.
So disappointing. Unfriendly. Over crowded or so it seemed. If a success is measured by the crowd then it would seem it was… successful."

Navigating Crowded Events
For those who prefer a more intimate art appreciation experience, visiting ArtsWorcester during regular gallery hours is highly recommended. Weekday afternoons, for instance, tend to be much less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and focused engagement with the exhibited pieces. This approach ensures you can take your time, absorb the details of each artwork, and potentially have more opportunities for quiet contemplation or conversation with gallery staff.
If you do choose to attend a popular opening reception, arriving early might offer a brief window of less congestion. However, be prepared for the possibility of significant crowds throughout the event. The experience can be a trade-off between the energetic buzz of a popular event and the serene enjoyment of art at your own pace.
