Day 96 : Sierra marathon and Muir Pass madness Woke up in the dark to a freezing river crossing, then hiked straight up to the iconic Muir Trail Shelter at 11,955ft named after the legend John Muir himself. Felt like we’d walked into a postcard… until the descent began. The next 26.5 miles were a gauntlet of endless snowfields, icy traverses above alpine lakes, and rivers hell bent on drowning o...

The Mist Trail in Yosemite is one of the most iconic hikes in the US, mand one of the wettest. It’s a 7-mile round-trip trek (if you come back down the more gradual John Muir trail to save your knees). You’ll gain 2,000 feet in elevation, but most stop after 1,000 vertical feet at the top of Vernal Fall. Vernal Fall, which towers at 317 feet, but Nevada Fall stands at a staggering 594 feet. If ...

Reviews Summary

The Loop is a popular 2.5-mile paved path in Wrightsville Beach, appreciated by locals and visitors for its accessibility and community feel. However, concerns have been raised about high parking fees and the inconsistent quality of the sidewalk, making it less ideal for activities like longboarding. Reddit

"Not a bad walk. I wish they had more than 1-2 dog waste stations. In some areas the sidewalk is very narrow. People tend to drive fast on W Salisbury Street and some drive right on through the crosswalk without slowing down. Be cautious. There has been some vomit at times outside the local establishments on N Lumina Avenue."

Adam

"Note: I am primarily a distance/endurance longboarder & cyclist; my views here are lensed through said context.

WARNING: SIDEWALK ONLY. And some of the worst quality sidewalk I’ve seen in over two decades here, especially for a “park.” Old, highly weathered concrete with frequent 70mm+ gaps that have been cheaply filled with scrap wood does not feel good on the knees by any stretch!

Unless you are walking/running, I cannot recommend avoiding this park enough. This is doubly true if you are looking to longboard, as the aforementioned sidewalk is too narrow to do anything besides basic pushing/pumping, especially coupled with the large number of pedestrians.

Additionally, I believe this is the only park in Wilmington proper that charges for parking at $5/hr. Though I’m sure this is to dissuade people parking here and walking to the beach, it feels extremely cheap given how poor quality the park and its “pathways” are in at present.

That said, this has been an extremely popular park for foot-traffic for as long as I can remember, hence bumping it up a star to reflect. However, I was unable to even get into my workout at all, and had to leave for a different park after less than 40 minutes.

For long-distance (actual, real deal, paved-and-not-repurposed-sidewalk) bike paths, I cannot recommend the section of the Cross City Trail running through UNCW enough!"

Michael Suggs

"This is Wrightsville beachs 2.5ish mile loop. Bridge to bridge that walks you past the shops of South Wrightsville Beach, around mainland restaurants, past the park, and back across the North bridge by way of the pier. Often travelled by locals with their pup and runners, the dashed asphault pavement heading towards Wilmington goes for quite aways toward downtown Wilmington. Fairly flat, smooth, easy traveling."

Understanding The Loop's Origins and Purpose

The John Nesbitt Loop, affectionately known as 'The Loop' in Wrightsville Beach, has a unique history rooted in community needs. It was originally conceived by John Nesbitt as a safe passage for residents to walk to the local post office. Today, it has evolved into a beloved 2.5-mile circuit that serves as the heart of the community's recreational activities. TikTok

This paved pathway is more than just a trail; it's a vital artery for locals and visitors alike. It winds through the vibrant commercial areas, offering glimpses of shops and restaurants, and also circles through more residential sections, providing a diverse experience for those who traverse it. Its popularity stems from its accessibility and its role in fostering a sense of community connection. TikTok

While its primary design caters to walkers and runners, its popularity has led to discussions about its limitations for other activities like longboarding or cycling due to its narrowness and the quality of the sidewalk in certain sections. Reddit

Navigating Parking and Accessibility

Parking is a significant consideration when planning a visit to The Loop. As highlighted by many visitors, parking fees can be quite high, particularly in areas close to the beach access points. This has led to frustration among locals who feel it's becoming a luxury to access their own community spaces. Reddit

The trail itself is a sidewalk, and its condition can be a point of contention. Some sections are well-maintained, while others feature older, weathered concrete with noticeable gaps, which can be uncomfortable for activities like longboarding. Reddit Visitors are advised to be aware of these conditions and to prioritize walking or running for the most comfortable experience. Reddit

For those with pets, it's important to note that while dogs are welcome, they must be leashed. Additionally, dog waste stations can be sparse, so visitors should come prepared to clean up after their pets responsibly. Reddit
