Next stop: Nguna, a 24 square kilometer “big” island in the north of Efate (the main island of Vanuatu). This beautiful little car-free island with its hilly terrain and coral reefs is actually the remains of an extinct volcano. It has two main volcanic cones and one of these overgrown volcanic craters is home to a unique cloud forest that has even formed its very own ecosystem. Nguna is home to s...

Reviews Summary

Nguna Island offers stunning natural beauty, particularly its volcano and marine life, but visitors should be prepared for potential access fees and the need for guides to certain attractions. While the hiking and snorkeling are highly praised, some travelers have expressed frustration with the cost and unfriendliness associated with accessing the volcano.

"They just built a gate near the top.. so we can’t access as it was. The guys at the gate were not friendly and asking 2000vt per person if you want to go at the lookout and take pictures. So get ready if you are really motivated. Otherwise the walk is nice and a bit steep. Don’t forget your water bottle it could be hot there."

"Don't waste your time

We spent quite a while travelling to Nguna to hike to the top of the extinct volcano. Unfortunately, after taking bus and water taxi and climbing most of the way to the top (in the heat), we were met by two boys who insisted we had to follow them around the mountain to the "entrance". At the "entrance", which was considerably father along and out of the way, we were greeted by several locals who very unkindly advised that the volcano is closed to public entry. They closed off all the entrances to prevent tourists from entering without passing through the village and paying an exhorbitant entrance fee. I found this particularly repulsive given the road that leads to most of the way to the summit and connects the villages is part funded by the Australian government at a cost of 150m vatu. Even worse, the corrupt local who is demanding the entrance fee was wearing a nice thick 24 carat gold chain.

We refused to pay to fund his personal gain and left. Don't waste your time."
