Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the San Francisco Church for its historical significance as Barquisimeto's first cathedral and its imposing architecture. However, some have expressed frustration with restrictions on photography, suggesting a need for more openness from church officials.

"In the place where this church stands today, there was a chapel of the Franciscan convent that was destroyed by the earthquake of 1812. Its reconstruction was slow due to various circumstances and was completed in 1865. In 1947 the original roof, very deteriorated, was replaced by one of reinforced concrete and major interventions were made throughout the church with this material. From the old temple of the 19th century, the chapel of Christ and the bell tower remain in their original state. The church has a rectangular floor plan and three naves separated from each other by rows of cylindrical columns linked by semicircular arches. At the end of the central nave is the presbytery and at its sides the side chapels, all framed by semicircular arches and two steps that separate them from the rest of the naves. In the north side nave are the entrances to the bell tower and the chapel of Christ, as well as an exit to the outside identical to the one in the right side nave. The main façade is characterized by presenting three entrances that lead directly to the internal naves; the central one is framed by a semicircular arch and double pilasters, which continue to the upper body, which houses a large circular window and culminates in a triangular pediment and a metal cross. The two entrances to the lateral naves that start from the main façade have triangular pediments on their lintels, and in the upper body a curvilinear wall of clean brickwork. To the north side of the main façade and on the same plane is located the bell tower with three bodies that develop vertically; the first with a square base and a rectangular window, the second with a hexagonal base and windows with semicircular arches and the third with a cylindrical base, circular clocks and a dome with a cross. The current church is built in reinforced concrete at a structural level and the roof covering is made of wood and gabled tiles, except for the roof of the presbytery which is a dome. Its doors and windows are made of solid double-paned wood. The floors are made of colored cement tiles. This church is a true landmark in the city's historic center, both historically and aesthetically. It was declared a National Historic Monument by Decree No. 26320 dated August 2, 1960."

"The temple was the city's cathedral, and houses inside, specifically in the acside, the choir made entirely of wood, as well as its tall columns, divided into three naves."

Jesus Materano

"The church is very beautiful, very imposing...
But unfortunately, I'm taking photographs of the country's main churches, and it was the only church in more than 98 visits that the Father didn't allow me to do the photography work. As in almost all the parishes in the different dioceses.
We need a parish priest here who is more willing to work with lay people of good will."

A Glimpse into History

The San Francisco Church in Barquisimeto, also known as the Antigua Catedral, is a structure steeped in history. Its origins trace back to a chapel of the Franciscan convent, which was tragically destroyed by the earthquake of 1812. The reconstruction process was lengthy, with the church finally completed in 1865. A significant renovation occurred in 1947, when the original roof was replaced with reinforced concrete, and substantial structural interventions were made throughout the building using the same material. Instagram

Despite these modernizations, elements of the original 19th-century temple remain. The Chapel of Christ and the bell tower are preserved in their original state, offering visitors a tangible connection to the church's past. The interior features a rectangular floor plan with three naves, separated by cylindrical columns supporting semicircular arches. The presbytery is at the end of the central nave, flanked by side chapels. Instagram

Declared a National Historic Monument in 1960, the San Francisco Church is not just a religious site but a vital piece of Barquisimeto's heritage. It served as the city's first cathedral and continues to be a landmark in the historic center, admired for both its historical narrative and its aesthetic presence. InstagramReddit

Architectural Highlights

The San Francisco Church presents a fascinating blend of historical architecture and later structural reinforcements. Its main facade is characterized by three entrances, with the central one framed by a semicircular arch and double pilasters. This design extends upwards to a section featuring a large circular window, culminating in a triangular pediment topped with a metal cross. The side entrances are simpler, with triangular pediments above their lintels. Instagram

A prominent feature is the bell tower, located to the north of the main facade. It rises in three distinct bodies: a square base with a rectangular window, a hexagonal middle section with arched windows, and a cylindrical top crowned with clocks and a dome. This vertical element adds significant character to the church's profile. Instagram

Internally, the church's three naves are divided by rows of cylindrical columns supporting semicircular arches, creating a sense of space and flow. The presbytery and side chapels are also framed by semicircular arches. While much of the structure is now reinforced concrete, the roof covering is a mix of wood and gabled tiles, except for the presbytery's dome. The floors are adorned with colored cement tiles, adding a touch of traditional artistry. Instagram
