What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Ateneo de Maracay is a cherished historical and architectural monument in Maracay, praised for its beautiful exterior restoration. While it has faced periods of closure, recent efforts signal a hopeful reopening, promising a return of cultural vibrancy to the city. Visitors anticipate its full restoration and renewed role in the community.
"The Maracay Athenaeum, located on López Aveledo Street and one block from the Cesar Giron Maestranza, began construction in 1923 under the orders of General Juan Vicente Gomez and the supervision of engineer Epifanio Balza, with an initial capacity of 450 people. The theater was inaugurated on June 24, 1926. The Athenaeum has been open and closed intermittently over the years, reactivated by cultural groups from the Aragua region. It was opened in 1995 under the protection of the Maracay Athenaeum Theater Foundation and is currently closed. It is a historical and cultural monument of the Aragua region, representing part of the culture of an era."

"The Ateneo building was closed due to disrepair in 1989 and restored in 1995, serving the community for only a few years. During this time, it hosted cultural events, plays, dance performances, and other activities for the enjoyment of Maracay residents. A statue of Mother María de San José, donated by a devotee, was placed in the side courtyard adjacent to the "La Capilla" Shopping Center (see attached photo). It is regrettable that these spaces are poorly maintained, as evidenced by accumulated trash and filth. The Ateneo is currently closed, and we hope for its reopening."
