Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate San Mateo Historic Center for its historical significance and charming colonial architecture, especially after recent beautification efforts. The town's connection to Simón Bolívar and its vibrant local festivals are also highlights. Some wish for more specific historical markers or points of interest to be highlighted.

"San Mateo was founded on November 30, 1620, by Lieutenant Governor Pedro Gutiérrez Lugo and Father Gabriel de Mendoza, thanks to the Royal Order of King Philip III, issued on April 18 and October 4, 1618. The governor of the Province of Venezuela, Francisco de la Hoz Berios, and Bishop Gonzalo de Ángulo, with the participation of the indigenous people of all the encomiendas, decreed the formation of towns throughout the territory. Thus, the judge commissioner ordered that the relocation of the quiriquire indigenous people from the encomiendas of Tomás de Aguirre, Antonio Bolívar, and Pedro Sánchez Borrego be facilitated so that within two months they could build the church, sacristy, and house of the doctrinal priest in the designated location. In 1709, the town of San Mateo holds special significance among the people of San Mateo, as a miracle of Christian faith occurred on November 26th: the apparition of the Virgin of Bethlehem to the Indian Tomás José Purito and his wife. Simón Bolívar also spent much of his childhood in San Mateo. Over time, the town has grown without losing its identity, traditions, beliefs, and roots. The entire town celebrates the apparition of the Virgin of Bethlehem every November 26th, the national holidays, especially those of February 28th and March 25th. Carnival also features the popular gorilla troupe, who, along with his hunters and Indians, provides a pleasant and enjoyable time for both children and adults. San Mateo is also a town of significant historical significance due to the heroic events that took place during the independence struggle and for having been the seat of the Bolívar family."

"Excellent, I like it.
It would be nice to show more... for example, Pipe Creek, the plaza, the front of the church, the Flores River, the Black Matea Angelino, and more.
Thanks."
