"The pancakes were quite delicious. Preparing the grill pork wrap a bit of a learned skill but was yummy as well."

Anthony Bourdain spot - but is it worth the hype or just a tourist trap? This is Bánh Xèo 46A, supposedly the most famous bánh xèo in Saigon. It’s been around since 1945 and went global after Anthony Bourdain called it the ‘soul of Saigon’ back in 2008. But today? It’s more tourist landmark. Don’t get me wrong - I love Anthony Bourdain - but this place? Let’s just say your wallet’s gonna feel i...

Banh xeo in HCMC, Vietnam……one of the best banh xeo I ever had. The place was packed when we came in . Only one table was left to share. That’s ok cause everyone mind their own business and ain’t nosy like us 🤣. One banh xeo was enough for 2 unless you’re being greedy and that’s ok too. Goi cuon was really good. Big shrimp and enough pork belly inside. #nuocmamafoods #heffaaclub #vietnamesefood #v...

Hidden Saigon Gem: The Giant Pancake Locals Love The Southern Vietnamese Pancake (Bánh Xèo Miền Nam) is famous for its big, crispy, golden crust — a sizzling beauty that lights up every street-food stall. Packed with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and fragrant herbs, this oversized pancake is folded like a crunchy half-moon and eaten the local way: wrapped in fresh greens, dipped in sweet–savory fish...

You cannot leave Vietnam without trying this dish. It’s called Bánh Xèo. I found this dish, along with many others, in a popular restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s perfect for your first night if you’re not sure what to eat. Loads of food stalls, proper seating, and everything is shown with photos and prices, although it is more expensive compared to local spots. Now, back to this dish. Bánh Xèo...

What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the incredibly delicious and crispy banh xeo, often highlighting the fresh ingredients and flavorful accompaniments like lemongrass skewers. The affordability and interactive eating experience are major draws, though some note that popular spots can be crowded and finding them might require a bit of exploration. Service can sometimes be slow, but the taste often makes it worthwhile.

"Enter via a door on the street, and head up the staircase on the left. Banh xeo and lemongrass skewers are delicious and inexpensive. A young man from the kitchen volunteered to help me with my hapless ricepaper handiwork. Check the opening times, take along some wet wipes, and enjoy Hanoi for real!"

"As a tourist, do you follow guide books ❓
I tend not to because, many years ago, I traveled to Malta 🇲🇹 with my guide book. And there I met a girl who worked for another guide book. She was in charge of updating that book for the following edition. And she explained to me how it worked: out of 11 restaurants (I think) already in the guide book, she had to visit 3 to make sure they were still ok, she had to eliminate 2 and add 2 new ones. The rest would remain unchanged and not verified. All this based on her personal criteria and that was all. 😳 Needless to say that the info you can find in that guide book can be outdated and inaccurate, to say the least! 🙄
Luckily, in Hanoi 🇻🇳, we didn't need to rely on guide books and we were able to escape tourist traps thanks to my brother-in-law, the local of the family. 🙏
He brought us to Bánh Xèo Tôm Nhảy Thanh Sang to eat Nem Lụi and Bánh xèo for what probably was one of my favorite meals in Vietnam 🇻🇳. Everything was so so delicious. I especially loved Nem Lụi (charcoal grilled lemongrass pork skewers 🍢 that are eaten rolled in rice paper)... but I would have been happy with just Bánh xèo (Vietnamese savory pancakes) too! 🤩
Now, if you don't know the place, it's kind of hard to find as you need to reach the first floor of an old building to find the restaurant, which, as (almost) always in Vietnam, didn't stand out for its coziness (that's an euphemism 😅).
The service was kinda slow but that gave us some more time to enjoy the amazing food.
Oh, and I almost forgot: that meal was VND82K each: less than €3! 🥳
