What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ninh Binh is widely praised for its stunning natural beauty, offering a serene escape with breathtaking karst landscapes and lush rice paddies. Visitors rave about the authentic homestay experiences, delicious local food, and the affordability of the region. The friendly and helpful nature of the hosts significantly enhances the stay, making it a memorable highlight for many.
"Amazing experience for an amazing price. We were offered to upgrade into a poolside suite and it was fantastic. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the AC is very strong. Breakfast is delicious and included. We were so impressed with the breakfast that we decided to have 2/3 dinner meals and are very pleased with the experience. We come from a Vietnamese-American household, and truly believe the food was similar to that of at home. The food we’ve had thus far was very hit or miss so we’re thankful for the quality each night. Thank you to Mrs. Thanh for the great food!
We were able to rent a semi automatic (200k per day, 45k for gas - lasted us all 3 days) scooter for our entire stay, and we followed the itinerary Thanh made for us (for free)! We decided to take ourselves around, and weren’t pushed to do a tour.
This is a beautifully run family establishment. Everyone plays a vital role into making your stay feel like a true home. I’d recommend it to everyone."

"Ninh Binh Homestay is a slice of heaven on earth! We spent 4 nights here in September and every single detail was absolutely perfect for our family of 7. Mr Thanh and Miss Hang are the kindest people, running an impeccable business with kindness and diligence. We ate breakfast and dinner, as well as some lunches, at the property and they were our favorite meals. Ms Hang's secret sauce she sets on the table each night is the best—don't miss it! We appreciated Mr. Thanh's assistance and expertise not only booking our tours, but also leading our bike rides himself. He arranged every detail, including staging the bikes for our younger kids so they could join the rides, with thoughtfulness. Our afternoon bike rides with him were our favorite way to see the real Vietnam so often missed. We loved going out in the mornings and swimming in the afternoons. I truly can't say enough wonderful things about this property and family! Do not hesitate to book here."

"Beautiful homestay with extremely kind and helpful staff. There are also manual motorbikes to rent at the location which is essential because the homestay is a bit from the city.
The rooms were new and spacious with A/C. We only stayed one night, but wished we had stayed more."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider staying in a homestay that offers a pool, as this can be a great way for kids to cool off and have fun after a day of exploring. The relaxed pace of the countryside also makes it less stressful for families. While some of the climbing at Mua Caves might be challenging for very young children, the views are spectacular. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and be prepared for the heat during warmer months.
💰 Budget Travelers
Eating at local eateries or enjoying the home-cooked meals at your homestay will save you money compared to tourist-oriented restaurants. You can easily explore the main attractions without needing expensive guided tours, making it an ideal destination for backpackers and those on a tight budget. The overall cost of travel here is significantly lower than in many other Southeast Asian destinations.
💑 Couples
Consider staying in a charming homestay with a private balcony overlooking the rice paddies or karst mountains. Enjoying delicious, home-cooked meals together at your homestay or a quiet local restaurant adds to the intimate experience. The peaceful ambiance of Ninh Binh provides a wonderful backdrop for a relaxing and memorable getaway for couples.

Exploring the Ninh Binh Countryside by Bike
Consider a guided bike tour if you want to delve deeper into the local culture and history. Hosts like Mr. Thanh are renowned for leading insightful rides, sharing knowledge about local customs, and introducing you to villagers. These tours often take you off the beaten path, revealing hidden temples and scenic spots that you might miss on your own. The flexibility of a bike allows you to stop whenever a view captures your eye or when you want to interact with locals.
When cycling, remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be mindful of local traffic. The best times for cycling are early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the beautiful golden hour light. The experience is not just about the scenery, but about the feeling of freedom and connection to the rural Vietnamese landscape.
The Magic of Ninh Binh's Boat Tours
Trang An Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a more extensive and arguably more dramatic boat journey. You'll navigate through numerous caves, some requiring you to duck your head, and pass by ancient temples and pagodas nestled within the karst formations. The sheer scale and natural beauty of Trang An are awe-inspiring, and the boatmen often sing or tell stories, adding to the cultural immersion.
When taking a boat tour, it's customary to tip your boatman if you enjoyed the experience. The tours are typically guided by local women who row the boats with their feet, a remarkable skill. The duration of the tours can vary, but most take around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, providing ample time to soak in the breathtaking scenery.
Choosing Your Ninh Binh Accommodation
Homestays are typically set amidst the beautiful countryside, offering peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the karst landscape. Many feature swimming pools, lush gardens, and comfortable, well-appointed rooms. The food served at homestays is a major highlight, with many guests raving about the quality and authenticity of the Vietnamese cuisine, often prepared with fresh, local ingredients.
While hotels are available in Ninh Binh city, they lack the intimate charm and personalized service of homestays. For those seeking a more luxurious experience, there are also some high-end resorts nestled in scenic locations, offering a blend of comfort and natural beauty. However, for a truly memorable and budget-friendly stay, a homestay is the way to go.
