Quang Phu Cau Incense Village in Gia Lam, Hanoi! ✨ For over a century, this village has been perfecting the art of incense making. Once exporting up to 300 tons of incense annually to India, the craft had to adapt in 2019 due to trade changes. Now, it thrives with domestic sales while keeping its rich heritage alive. 📸 Pro Tip:

Quang Phu Cau Village is NOT worth driving 1.5 hours from Hanoi. Thankfully we were already heading south, but we were more looking forward to see how the incense is made as they’re seen in temples everywhere across the country. This location has been featured on CNN and in winning Smithsonian picture contests, so we have to scratch our heads wondering—does this “village” get larger at other times...

Reviews Summary

Visitors often praise the stunning visual appeal of the incense fields, calling it a photographer's paradise and a unique cultural experience. The affordability of tours and the hands-on workshops, like hat painting, are frequently highlighted as positives. However, some find the overall experience to be quite short, with the main draw being the photo opportunities rather than extensive cultural immersion.

"To start off it is difficult to adequately describe the pristine beauty and sights we experienced today - just wow! Our tour guide ‘Bruce Lee’ was absolutely amazing. His knowledge, passion and enthusiasm in sharing the history and culture of Vietnam was sincerely appreciated. We are travelling as a group of mature sisters who enjoy a drink or three and Bruce ensured we had plenty of opportunities to stop to get extra supplies (beer, wine and mixers) and endured the endless bathroom breaks needed with grace and humour. Highly recommend this tour and make sure you ask for Bruce Lee to be your guide 😀Despite the misty weather, Hoa made the entire trip an absolute memorable one. As a solo traveller, i felt completely safe and I truly appreciated Hoa’s knowledge and the pride for his beautiful country. What I also appreciated was Hoa would inform me in advance when it was appropriate to tip people and how much. Additionally, Hoa made sure i was well catered for during the trip, which included providing an umbrella and poncho in case it rained. I would highly recommend giving this tour a go, you will be in great hands if you are guided by Hoa.The most beautiful experience at our short hub in Hanoi. We are very pleased with the choice of this day trip, where we both came around incense village, ancient capital Hoa Lu and wonderful Ninh Binh (beautiful nature).Great must do experience while in Hanoi. Our guide Nien was very good English speaking tour guide who explained everything we needed to know about the chaotic city including all its history and religion. He made sure everything went smoothly without delay. Boat ride a lot of fun, maybe a little too long though. Local temple was great to learn about the religion. I sense farm was interesting look at local ways with a beautiful opportunity for some great pictures."

The Art of Incense Making

Quang Phu Cau Incense Village boasts a history spanning over a century, dedicated to the intricate craft of incense making. This traditional job is deeply woven into the fabric of Vietnamese life, with incense serving as a spiritual bridge connecting the earthly realm to the divine. Instagram+1 The process begins with selecting specific types of wood and natural ingredients, which are then ground into a fine powder. This powder is mixed with a binding agent, often a natural adhesive like tree bark paste, and then meticulously rolled onto bamboo sticks. The vibrant colors, such as the iconic red and pink, are achieved using natural dyes. Instagram+1

The drying process is a crucial stage, where the freshly made incense sticks are laid out in vast courtyards under the sun. This is the visually stunning spectacle that draws many visitors. The sheer volume and uniformity of the colorful sticks create a breathtaking landscape, making it a prime location for photography. Instagram+1 Historically, the village was a major exporter, sending tons of incense annually to countries like India. While trade dynamics have shifted, the village continues to thrive, adapting its production for domestic markets while preserving its rich heritage. Instagram
