What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Livingstone Railway Station is a charming historical site, but its main draw is the overnight train. While the journey offers a unique cultural experience and friendly interactions, travelers should be prepared for significant delays, basic and sometimes damaged amenities, and pricey onboard food. It's an adventure for the patient traveler.
"1st Class Sleeper cost K420, they are 4-bed cabins of varying quality. The train left on-time at 20:00 on Monday and was supposed to arrive at Kapiri Mposhi at 21:45 on Tuesday. However we arrived at 14:00 on Wednesday, so 16 hours delay and 42 hours total travel time.
The cabins are not in good condition. Seating/bedding areas are very damaged, some windows are smashed or covered, the in-cabin sinks are non-functional, and there is no running water available anywhere on the train. The toilets are also troublesome, some a usable, some aren't.
The restaurant car sells food (nishima + chicken or fish) for K100, which is a lot of money for what you get. However, the atmosphere in the public spaces is vibrant with friendly passengers and staff. It is easy to make friends here!
Overall, I enjoyed the experience, but I can see how a regular passenger would not enjoy the bad state of the train or the schedule."

"The train departs now only one time a week on Monday at 20.00 getting to Lusaka the next day Tuesday at 20.00. So 24 hours to travel 474 Kms. There is no longer 1st class sleeper only 6 bed 2nd class sleeper. The fare is 2nd class sleeper is K180"

"Nicer than the train station in Lusaka."

The Livingstone to Lusaka Train Journey
Amenities on board are basic. Sleeper cabins, often 6-bed compartments in 2nd class, can be in poor condition, with damaged bedding, broken windows, and non-functional sinks. Running water is often unavailable, and toilet facilities can be unreliable. The restaurant car offers meals, but at a price point that many find disproportionate to the quality. For a more comfortable and economical journey, bringing your own food and drinks is highly recommended.
Despite the challenges, the social aspect of the train journey is a major draw. Passengers and staff are often friendly and engaging, creating a vibrant atmosphere where it's easy to strike up conversations and make new friends. This cultural immersion is what many travelers cherish, making the delays and discomforts a worthwhile trade-off for an authentic Zambian experience.
Navigating the Station and Ticketing
Purchasing tickets is typically done in person at the station's ticket office. Given the limited services and the infrequent departures (currently once a week on Mondays), it's wise to secure your tickets in advance if possible. Be prepared for varying ticket prices, with 2nd class sleepers being more affordable than the older 1st class options. Always confirm the latest fare information directly at the station.
While waiting, you can soak in the atmosphere, observe the daily life around the station, and perhaps interact with local vendors. However, don't expect modern amenities like Wi-Fi or readily available charging points. It's advisable to have your devices fully charged and to bring your own entertainment for the wait and the journey ahead.
