Reviews Summary

La Alacena Trattoria is celebrated for its exceptional homemade pasta and cozy Italian trattoria atmosphere, earning accolades from both locals and guides. While many praise the delicious flavors, generous portions, and friendly service, a few diners found some dishes slightly undercooked or the experience to be a bit overhyped.

"What can I say. The pasta is really good. The best Italian restaurant I found in Buenos. It gets really crowded so book in advance or you will have to wait for the table. Recommended place."

Maciej Florczyk

"This was a decent restaurant, but it didn't stand out to me as great. The one exception was the affogato. It's made with a coffee syrup and candied hazelnuts and is one of the best (if not the best) I've ever had. Aside from the affogato, we ordered a fennel salad, two pastas (lasagna and garganelli), and a chocolate torte. They all had good flavor. I've just had other versions of these items that I've liked better. The one technical issue was that the garganelli was undercooked. I like my pasta al dente, but this pasta was borderline crunchy.

The service was all right. We had a hard time flagging down our server to get the bill, which hadn't been a struggle at other restaurants.

The portion size is large, so you're definitely getting your money's worth on that front.

Overall, this isn't a bad restaurant, but given all the press I'd seen on it and the need to make a reservation in advance, it's overhyped."

Caroline Ahlgrim

"Fantastically delicious! The veal meatballs were the standout dish during our visit — but every plate was a joy. Our server, Hector, was attentive, knowledgeable, and kind, even answering questions in English when we struggled with our Spanish. Make sure you add some ciabatta to your order. You’ll be glad you did."

What's behind Buenos Aires' unique Italian food culture?

In the lively Palermo Soho area, tucked between mural-plastered alleyways, open- sided brewpubs and rows of tiny galleries, shoe shops and leatherwork studios, turquoise- fronted La Alacena looks like a cosy trattoria transported from Italy. Owner Julieta Oriolo, whose mother is from Calabria, on Italy’s toe, makes ravioli and tagliatelle on site, steadfastly resisting any urge to pile on extra cheese.

A simpler, more wholesome time indeed. Well, you can stop living in the past.
