Reviews Summary

Africola is celebrated for its vibrant, African-inspired cuisine with bold flavors and creative dishes, especially the 'Feed Me' menu. While many praise the unique taste experiences, attentive service, and lively atmosphere, some diners found certain dishes to be lukewarm or lacking punch. Portions are consistently described as generous, though vegetarian options have occasionally left diners unsatisfied.

"A Warm and Memorable Evening at Africola

We enjoyed a lovely Friday evening with the work crew at Africola, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The three-course chef’s selection menu was delicious, beautifully presented, and full of flavour without being overpowering. The mild spice added just the right touch, leaving everyone feeling comfortably full and satisfied.

The wait staff were genuinely friendly and engaging, creating a welcoming atmosphere and clearly enjoying what they do. Even though we were seated outside on a crisp winter night, the outdoor heating kept us cosy throughout the evening.

Africola is definitely a great spot for catching up with friends, family, or colleagues over a relaxed and memorable meal. Highly recommended!"

"Adelaide is such an amazing town for food, so I had anticipated our last night visit to Africola all week. While it was good, it was not the mind blowing experience I had hoped for. Food is good, just not amazing. Staff maybe had an off night, but we felt abandoned for long periods of time. Best dish for me was the hummus, but even that lacked punch. The steak was good, but I was expecting something really tasty."

Bryan Middleton

"We were really looking forward to our meal but sadly left disappointed.
Firstly, the service was great and could not fault the young guy who served us.
Got the Feed Me menu but the vegetarian option.
Value for money could have been good as we got four starters, four mains (one was the shaved cabbage salad which was nice but, just a cabbage salad at the end of the day) and two desserts for $170 total.
Highlights were the falafels which had a lettuce wrap with pickled vegetable, the sprouted lentil salad and pumpkin.
The downside was that almost all meals were lukewarm to cold. At the end of the day, they were all entirely vegetable based, save for the bread at the start, so we left quite unsatisfied. Left feeling like I’d had a feed me menu of cold salads which I would enjoy but not for $170.
Vegetarian requirement does limit the menu somewhat but have had many standout vegetarian feed me menus nearby so it can’t solely be due to this.
The creme brûlée had a liqueur on it that was so bitter we and overwhelming we couldn’t eat any of it which felt like such a waste.
Overall, we won’t return which is such a shame as the service and atmosphere is lovely."

4 Adelaide restaurants that impress

To be fair, I’ve actually never been to Africola, but a lot of fuss has been made over this East End restaurant that combines the flavours and cooking styles of Africa, with the hot diggity damn good produce that comes out of South Australia. Africola is the creation of South African-born chef Duncan Welgemoed, who worked his way through London’s Michelin-starred kitchens, before deciding Adelaide was an a’ight place to settle. This dinner-only restaurant beats to the rhythm of its own drum and is unlike anything else you’ll experience in Adelaide, maybe Australia.

Hands down one of the best restaurants in Adelaide, Africola puts a modern spin on African cuisine and it’s so popular you’re going to need to make a booking in advance. Opt for the feed me menu and let the chef show you a good time with their cauliflower steak covered in tahini sauce and spiced butter, crispy eggplant served with chilli and shallot jam, peri peri chicken, and cool WA pipis in fermented chilli and garlic. Regardless of how stuffed you are, dessert is not optional—you’ll roll home, but you’ll roll home happy.

Part party house, part serious food den, Africola creates a winning vibe through mixing kooky decor and audacious modern art while presenting North African food from an exciting new angle. Vegetables are heroes on the plate, but seafood is also sublime – and a chicken skin and hot chicken dripping ‘tea sandwich’ is an irresistible, sinful treat. Food is prepared and presented with energetic verve, with the big open kitchen and bar areas serving like stages on which the switched-on staff can perform.

Africola is one of Adelaide’s most exciting tables and, thankfully, it’s open for lunch as well as dinner. Chef Duncan Welgemoed has made a name for himself by serving up contemporary plays on South and North African cuisine in an atmosphere that’s as inviting as your best friend’s dinner party. The hottest dish is the cauliflower steak covered in tahini, but opt for the feed me menu to sample a wider spread of flavours including sprouted lentils, golden dahl and fried cauliflower.

Our picks: best Middle Eastern and African eateries in Adelaide

From South Africa comes Africola- a colourful creation complete with a large fire pit in the kitchen to cook those "bush meats". There's no springbok or ostrich on the menu though, instead that fire pit could sizzle with South African spiral sausages called boerewors, wood roasted hearts, ash potatoes, whole fish, and peri-peri chicken. Despite the heat of the kitchen, there's a cool vibe in this busy place.
