Reviews Summary

Chianti is a long-standing Adelaide institution praised for its exceptional food, including fish, steaks, and desserts, as well as its impressive wine list and attentive service. While many highlight the culinary delights and sophisticated ambiance, some diners have noted issues with loud music, inconsistent pasta dishes, and occasional slow service during busy periods. The restaurant's commitment to Italian tradition and quality ingredients is evident, making it a popular choice for special occasions.

"Food - magnificent.
Atmosphere - probably needs some thought. It was a Monday evening, so the restaurant was about 25% full. Not sure if this influenced the reason that the staff had the music playing so loud that it was difficult to hold conversations."

"The food was hit and miss, delicious bread, nice burrata and an unusual take on beef carpaccio which was tasty.
The pasta dishes were a let down. The black pasta and crab was not what I expected and the combination of thick pasta with a heavy tomato base didn't pair well with the crab and I left most of it. The rabbit ragu was dry. On a positive note the zucchini side was really good as were the potatoes and steak. We finished with cheese and panna cotta
The wine list was small but both the Riesling and Shiraz bottles we ordered were excellent.
The service was sparse but friendly."

"I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant this week. While eating my pasta, I found a piece of plastic in the dish. I understand that mistakes can happen in any kitchen, and I politely informed one of the FOH staff so they could be aware and prevent it in the future. The staff member was very apologetic and handled it well, asking if they could take the piece to show the chef, which I agreed to.

However, when they returned, I was told that the chef said it wasn’t plastic but “onion membrane.” What upset me was that instead of simply saying, “I’m so sorry, it must have gotten in by mistake,” which would have been totally fine, the response felt more like a denial. It left me feeling as though we were being questioned for raising a concern — which was disappointing.

I asked to have the piece back, but was told it had already been discarded and couldn’t be retrieved. That explanation didn’t feel very reassuring.

I had visited this restaurant once before and had such a great experience that I decided to return and even recommended it to friends. The FOH staff were lovely — professional, kind, and understanding, and I truly appreciated that.

But unfortunately, due to the way the issue was handled by the kitchen, I’m not sure I’ll be returning anytime soon."

Siblings Jessica Favaro-Richards and Nicholas Favaro have taken the baton from their parents to balance tradition and modernity with grace on their seasonal menu. Start with addictive rabbit croquettes, crunchy and soft in all the right places, and served with dragoncello sauce (tarragon salsa) and pickled carrots. Meaty centrepiece dishes are chargrilled over sangiovese vines, like juicy half-chicken with Jerusalem artichoke and porcini.

Adelaide’s 20 most powerful restaurants in the city – ranked

Valued as an institution, loved because of its matriarch and visited continually because of its quality, Chianti dropped ‘classico’ from its name in their recent re-brand because – obviously – it was tautological. Chianti means classico. The power of this restaurant is its longevity, but can also be found in the influence and mentorship it has provided to other head honchos around town like Sondra Deering, who name-checked Maria in our recent piece; and Luke Turton, who left Chianti just seven days ago to launch Part Time Lover (of which he’s a co-owner).

Mamma Mia! Our favourite Adelaide pasta dishes

One of the oldest Italian restaurants in the city, Chianti is consistently staffed by the heavy hitters of Adelaide’s hospo scene. That’s why, 35 years on, the kitchen stays true to its roots, cooking to time honoured recipes, the same way they’ve been doing since 1985 – the white tablecloths wearing spaghetti sauce battle scars at the end of every service. All the dishes are excellent, but we particularly love the crab spaghetti: long black stands of pasta tangled round meaty chunks of crab, bound by the briefest, roast tomato sauce.

The menu reads like a love letter to Italian cuisine, with dishes like the burrata primavera, a delicate dance of spring vegetables, cheese, pea vinaigrette, and mint. Then there’s the 300-gram Kerwee Angus sirloin, embraced by an aromatic and buttery bistecca sauce.
