Siblings Jessica Favaro-Richards and Nicholas Favaro have taken the baton from their parents to balance tradition and modernity with grace on their seasonal menu. Start with addictive rabbit croquettes, crunchy and soft in all the right places, and served with dragoncello sauce (tarragon salsa) and pickled carrots. Valued as an institution, loved because of its matriarch and visited continually because of its quality, Chianti dropped ‘classico’ from its name in their recent re-brand because – obviously – it was tautological. Chianti means classico. The power of this restaurant is its longevity, but can also be found in the influence and mentorship it has provided to other head honchos around town like Sondra Deering, who name-checked Maria in our recent piece; and Luke Turton, who left Chianti just seven days ago to launch Part Time Lover (of which he’s a co-owner).

Considered as one of the best Italian restaurants in Adelaide, Chianti has served up over 30 years of outstanding cuisine in what could be considered one of the best Italian dining locations and atmospheres in Australia. The food menus change several times a year, and they are heavily focused on seasonal and local produce, taking strong influence directly from regional Italy. All the dishes are excellent, but we particularly love the crab spaghetti: long black stands of pasta tangled round meaty chunks of crab, bound by the briefest, roast tomato sauce.

With softly colored walls, exquisite masonry, and a collection of evocative artwork and luxurious wines, Chianti lays down an ambiance only the Bel Paese’s old-town ristorante can offer. The menu reads like a love letter to Italian cuisine, with dishes like the burrata primavera, a delicate dance of spring vegetables, cheese, pea vinaigrette, and mint. Then there’s the 300-gram Kerwee Angus sirloin, embraced by an aromatic and buttery bistecca sauce.

Stroll down to Hutt Street in the East End to red-brick Chinati, and you’ll discover a beacon of Roman culinary delight. Business suits are a book in for long lunches, while couples rediscover their romantic flicker over candlelit dinners. The breakfast menu goes far beyond fry-ups and toast (but you’ll find that too) and the evening menu features the likes of antipasti, as well as several other dish variants.
