Reviews Summary

Majuba Bistro is celebrated for its sophisticated ambiance and expertly prepared European dishes, with many guests highlighting the quality of ingredients and the skill of the Michelin-trained chef. While the food is frequently praised, some diners have noted inconsistencies in service speed and portion sizes, alongside concerns about pricing. Despite these points, the overall dining experience is often described as exceptional, making it a top choice in Albany.

"Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Albany. Food was fantastic, wine was good and service was excellent. Food was very flavourfull. Sardines on toast were really good as was the crepe suzzette which you do not often see on the menu. We sat upstairs which we really liked as a bit less noisy. There is also a very quaint balcony with seating upstairs."

"To be honest with you we had a Night organized here arachini balls tasted like sardines from a bait place.and the pate taste like dog food. It is really hard for me to be so abrupt and so rude about one’s food but honestly, the prices are over the moon for stuff that smells like what we feed our dogs, unfortunately for us and many of your others. This is probably not the place for you to go to. I hope that you enjoy food at other places. Looks good but honestly so bad unfortunately."

"Cute bistro and very lovely for a Wednesday evening.
Amazing food.
I got the lamb and it was out of this world.
The steak and mussels (the special of the day) were also lovely.

Highly recommend for a nicer dinner in the area"

Opening just before Covid hit last year, this charming, softly lit bistro ¬– run by owners Andrea Love and Johann Prins-Gurtel – has survived to become the new local favourite, complete with plush seating, white tablecloths and a sophisticated colour palette. Michelin-trained chef Prins-Gurtel has designed a menu of traditional European bistro dishes, including tapas with local seafood, and heartier dishes like bouillabaisse, truffle-infused French onion soup, roast duck a l’orange, and beef cheeks in red wine jus. Plus, panna cotta with gorgonzola and honey for dessert.

Exploring the Great Southern: Where to eat and drink in Albany

The choice restaurant in Albany for a special occasion or date night, Majuba’s interiors are total bistro: marble tabletops, a red velvet booth, bentwood chairs and dark floorboards. Then there’s the well-executed French- and Spanish-inspired favourites from chef Johann Prins-Gurtel, who clearly knows his product and has the technique to pull off the classics – crab and chilli spaghetti, say, or perfectly pink prime steak – effortlessly. A solid international wine list completes the package, and you’ll rub shoulders with the locals.
