Majuba Bistro

Opening just before Covid hit last year, this charming, softly lit bistro ¬– run by owners Andrea Love and Johann Prins-Gurtel – has survived to become the new local favourite, complete with plush seating, white tablecloths and a sophisticated colour palette. Michelin-trained chef Prins-Gurtel has designed a menu of traditional European bistro dishes, including tapas with local seafood, and heartier dishes like bouillabaisse, truffle-infused French onion soup, roast duck a l’orange, and beef cheeks in red wine jus. Plus, panna cotta with gorgonzola and honey for dessert.

The choice restaurant in Albany for a special occasion or date night, Majuba’s interiors are total bistro: marble tabletops, a red velvet booth, bentwood chairs and dark floorboards. Then there’s the well-executed French- and Spanish-inspired favourites from chef Johann Prins-Gurtel, who clearly knows his product and has the technique to pull off the classics – crab and chilli spaghetti, say, or perfectly pink prime steak – effortlessly. Following years of travel and residence in Albany, a driven couple who loved fine dining, fine wine, and sophisticated design started a new business. After settling in Kalgan, they worked with local artists and South African artists to open Majuba Country Lodge, which provides a distinctive lodging option. Soon after, Majuba Bistro opened its doors under the direction of Johann, a talented chef with Michelin-star training.

Since serving as the original Chef in 1996, George Lyristis has been the creative culinary mind behind The Bistro at Red Bank, as well as Greek Eats & Teak.
