Located on level three of the Crystalbrook Vincent hotel at Howard Smith Wharves you will find the property's rooftop bar, Fiume Bar. When the bar first opened and we stayed at the hotel my first impressions of Fiume was that I was a little disappointed and thought I wouldn’t really return just because I believed venues such as Mr. Percival’s and Felons Brewery generally were superior and possessed a less obstructed view of the city and Brisbane River. However, whilst I still believe it doesn’t provide the best view, as Howard Smith Wharves generally get busier, escaping the crowds (to some extent) and opting for a drink and bite to eat at Fiume is definitely a nice alternative.

The list would not be complete without one of Fiume’s homages to Brisbane in the form of liquid gold. While the name may inspire the need for a shower, the South Bank Sands with El Jimador Tequila, Pomme Verte, aloe vera, mint and citrus is definitely a refreshing take on the marg-ellous drink. At Fiume, Vincent’s roof-terrace bar, I have a cocktail with the hotel’s marketing ace, Anna Palmer, who came home to Brisbane four years ago. “I was shocked at how much it’s changed,” she tells me over a Pink Koala (eucalyptus vodka, Cointreau and cranberry). “I think Brisbane’s now a pretty cool place to be.

First, there’s Fiume’s location: a greenery-lined perch atop Crystalbrook Vincent beneath the Story Bridge. An evening here is set to the gentle thump of the traffic above while you take in cracking views of the river and financial district. It manages to feel expansive and intimate at the same time.
