In an area surrounded by good brunch options, Bayleaf is always busy. This speaks volumes about the quality of its food and its service – the staff are always excellent – but it does mean you may need to wait at peak times (booking is available for groups larger than five and is definitely recommended). Favourites include the “scrambled special” with chilli-marinated feta, salsa verde, greens and avocado, served over sourdough and the range of house-made teas on offer.

The coffee is top-notch, and they have a great range of other drinks including a seasonal smoothie and the ‘tropicana’ which is an anti-inflammatory tonic incorporating orange juice, lemon, ginger and turmeric – my personal favourite on a hot day. For food, you can’t go past the Bayleaf Greens, which has become a staple on the menu, and offers a bowl of kale, broccoli, buckwheat, avocado, herbs, lemon, nuts and seeds, topped with poached eggs. The Bayleaf Aussie Burger also comes highly recommended, or for something sweet try the banana and hemp seed bread topped with seasonal berries and a house-made miso caramel sauce.

Known for great breakfast and lunch options, the Bayleaf Café features great coffee and smoothies and yummy meals to satisfy you, either before heading out for the day, or to keep you going until tea time. The full menu contains smaller plates like cranberry and cinnamon porridge or F.A.T. (feta, avocado and tomato served with toasted sourdough bread), to hearty meals like the Hangover, which includes pork and fennel sausage with smashed potatoes, spinach, spicy relish and two fried eggs. Also, the café features gluten-free menu items as well as vegetarian dishes.

One of Chris Hemsworths favourite coffee spots, Bay Leaf cafe is one of the most central breakfast spots in Byron Bay, sitting just off the towns main high street. With staple brekkie favourites like bircher museli and smahed avo, Bay Leaf Cafe also offers up some pretty tasty alternatives too – including stewed rhubarb with yogurt to the sweet corn fritter stack which is a personal favourite. It gets pretty packed, especially with the pre work crowd so be prepared for a wait, but you can also order takeaway if you fancy brekkie on the beach.

I’m putting it out there: Bay Leaf serves the best coffee in Byron Bay. Like most cafes in the area, Bay Leaf sources ingredients from local suppliers with beans from Marvel Street Coffee Roasters, which is literally just across the road, and bread is sourced from The Bread Social. Lunchtime salads are a standout with combinations such as flaked ocean trout, shredded kale and wakame or seared sesame tuna with honeyed carrots and brown rice.

Times are changing and Bayleaf is evolving with the launch of dine in bookings for the first time ever. From now on you’ll be able to book online for breakfast and lunch for tables of over 8 with tables available for walk ins for under 8 people. We’ve also revamped our takeaway section and outdoor seating to focus on keeping our locals experience enjoyable with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy your takeaway, with safe distancing of course.

Although I usually avoided the busy and touristy center of Byron, I broke my rule a few times to enjoy brunch in this popular, always packed cafe. The delicious food, nice service and cool environment really invites you to join the crowd on a sunny weekend morning.

I could probably talk for hours about all the amazing food in Byron but our top spots would probably have to be Bayleaf, The Byron Bay General Store, Elixiba and the hole in the wall crepe place on Lawson street (they have sweet and savoury vegan crepe options!!).

It’s lovely on a lazy sunny weekend morning, but gets very busy!. London was more than welcome in the front section, but we were lucky to get a table, so be mindful after 8am.

Get the falafel breakfast bowl, sounds weird but I still think about it. I noticed there was usually a wait but it was worth it. I got wifi here and worked.
