Byron General Store, which dates back to 1947, has been transformed into an eco-friendly, predominantly solar-powered café by Byron residents Ben Gordon and Phil Taylor. Expect reclaimed wooden furniture, compostable takeaway packaging and a 10 percent discount for diners who walk or cycle to the store, plus 50 cents off your coffee if you bring your own mug. All menu items are vegan unless labelled otherwise and are made from produce grown locally.

This is a relatively new café which opened early Dec 2017, whilst still new it’s set in the original General Store which was established in 1947, and the guys have done a great job bringing it back to life putting a modern touch on the old school theme. Food wise the menu is pretty straight forward with lots of the usual crowd pleasers; burgers, smoothie bowls, waffles, pastries etc which personally limits things a little for me however the crew were happy to modify a few things and ditch the bun with a few of the burgers, add some ferments and satisfy my requirements. Also features a lot of the usual suspects, kombucha on tap, nitro coffee, cold brews etc.

The shop opened as The Top Store milk bar and takeaway in 1951, which makes it the 2nd earliest continually running business in the Byron Bay area after The Great Northern Resort. Ask any kind of Byron Bay local their favourite spot for a coffee or a relaxed lunch and also they’ll most likely claim it’s The Top Store. From surfie to hippy to current city imports, The Leading Shop interest all of the distinctive town’s walks of life, not to mention the streams of visitors who handle to find it as well as their very own spot of lawn out the front to resolve into some sunlight.
