"Amazing Detroit style pizza! We always visit this place whilst in Canberra. Pizza base is fluffy and crispy. Their special sauce makes the pizza complete! Good area for families. Relaxed and chill! Book if coming for dinner."

"First time in Australia, loving the city layout and places to go. Grease Monkey is right near our hotel and a perfect choice for a group setting. I enjoyed the full range of beer on tap and a couple of their sandwiches. Looking for a burger? Perfect place, I also had this Philly cheese Steak. Not quite like the United States but still good. I also recommend the pizza place next store. It’s funny, I traveled half way around tfw world and found Detroit style pizza. Never had it before. It was good but I’m from Chicago. 😉 Highly recommend these establishments. A+"

"Absolutely delicious! The Detroit-style pizza was perfectly crispy on the edges and loaded with flavor — one of the best I’ve had. The mac and cheese bites were golden, creamy, and addictive — a must-try! On top of that, the customer service was exceptional. Friendly, fast, and genuinely welcoming. Can’t wait to come back!"

Top restaurants and cafés in Canberra
These guys are the mechanics you see when you need to grease up your system with burgers, fried chicken and a milkshake. When you need a full service and oil change, that’s the time to go big with a burger featuring a beef patty, streaky bacon, egg, cheese, pineapple, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, onion, relish, and special sauce. But if you’re part of the vocal movement who know that the best fried filling for a burger is a fillet of fish, then you want to order the ‘Wanda’, which stars tempura hake, cheese, lettuce, tartare and relish, in a higher end riff on your favourite fast food order.
Best takeaway in Canberra
Nailing the art of the perfect burger so well that they have time to experiment with different flavour combinations, Grease Monkey gets our need for a good burger, to-go. Starting with their signature beef burger, it only goes up from there, giving you the full-service (literally, they even have a burger called Full-Service) where things get dirtier and greaser as the menu goes on (in the best way, of course). Their American Detroit style pizzas are also available for takeaway, making it the perfect deliciously naughty treat when you don’t feel like cooking.
63 things to do in Canberra with kids
I was convinced that nothing could convert me from being a hard core thin and crispy pizza base lover… until I headed to too cool for school Grease Monkey and discovered their Detroit style slabs of thick based pizza perfection. Their 8 Mile – topped with bacon, prawns, jalapenos, basil, cheese blend and a vodka sauce – was the stuff of pizza fantasy and I had to beat the family off to get more slices. Then there’s their juicy burgers, succulent fried chicken, addictive truffle mac and cheese bites, and jalapeño poppers that had the boys swooning.
Where is the Best American Food in Canberra
Grease Monkey is located on the busy Lonsdale Street in Braddon, which used to be the auto central of Canberra before it became Canberra's most industrially hip and modern strip of cafes. Grease Monkey is located inside an old mechanics shed that has been renovated and is now a popular place to simply "hang out" and enjoy the big burgers and American-style fried chicken on offer. At the time of writing there are DJ's on Friday and Saturday night, so you can relax with dinner and finish off the night with a New York Cheesecake or Banana Split.
Best Gluten-Free Restaurants in Canberra
Grease Monkey is one of our favourite burger spots in Canberra, and most of its indulgent burger menu is gluten-free. We can’t go past the classic Greasy, which features a beef patty, lettuce, cheese, onion, pickles, GM relish, and Greasy’s sauce, with a side of fries, of course. The gang at Grease Monkey often pop up to feed hungry souls at festivals and events around Canberra, so be sure to keep an eye on their socials to catch them out and about around town.
Canberra's Meat-ing Places
The antithesis to Lonsdale Street’s proliferation of kale and quinoa, Grease Monkey unashamedly offers ‘sometimes food’. The ‘GFC’ (Greasy Fried Chicken) is finger licking good, served with mash and gravy and coleslaw, and the Dirty Bird is another cheeky nod to the colonel’s secret herbs and spices. We also love the slow-cooked, mouth watering smokey BBQ pork brisket, crispy apple cider slaw + a spicy habanero mayo.

Braddon - Canberra's go-to eat street
There are still remnants of the past in shop names that reference the area’s receding industry, like burger joint Grease Monkey. Some even still cling to their leases, despite the encroaching cool. Repco is wedged self-consciously between a trendy bakery and a cafe, like the youngest child in the middle seat on a long car trip: aware its presence is a persistent annoyance.
