The very definition of quaint, Wombat Hill House is tucked away in the botanic gardens surrounded by the lush greenery of the region. The cafe relies heavily on the adjacent kitchen garden, developing the menu around the in-season produce, on any given visit you're likely to find baked goods courtesy of Dairy Flat Farm Daylesford as well as hearty brunch options with poached eggs, sauteed greens, halloumi and perfectly textured toasted sourdough from the next door Bake House.

Immerse yourself in a unique dining experience surrounded by the enchanting mural art created by Allan Wolf-Tasker, the husband of renowned restaurateur Alla Wolf-Tasker, who established the highly regarded Lake House in the 1980s at Wombat Hill House. Allan has created a captivating storybook-style mural at Wombat Hill House, located in the beautiful Wombat Hills Botanic Gardens. The mural adds to the magical ambience of the place and depicts a blend of real and fantastical creatures in the picturesque gardens.

Nestled within the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, Wombat Hill House has been delighting visitors since 2011 with its simple, seasonal menu that pays homage to the region. Featuring an abundance of produce from Dairy Flat Farm and carefully selected trusted suppliers, the menu offers a delectable range of hot and cold items perfect for takeout. We highly recommend ordering a scrumptious spread to savour under one of the heritage-listed trees or at a nearby picnic table.

When you get to the top you can either go round on the paths to the left or to the right and through the main gardens past the Wombat Hill House. On the other side of the garden, you come out through the main entrance onto Central Springs Road. From there it’s an easy walk straight down Central Springs Road past the churches and back to the roundabout at the top end of Vincent Street and there you are – in the centre of town again.

There you'll find one of the region's most charming cafes: Wombat Hill House. This is a spin-off venue from Alla Wolfe-Tasker AM, of Lake House fame, so you know we're dealing with no ordinary cafe.

Situated in the middle of the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, this gorgeous café is set in a cottage with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is simple and tasty and there are a wide selection of baked goods from local Dairy Flat Farm that change regularly – the display is mouthwatering!. Get here early to claim a table and absorb the country charm of this hidden gem.

Located within the enchanting Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, Wombat Hill House transforms a 1940s caretaker cottage into a spot for all-day grazing. This country-style café serves simple albeit delicious seasonal food, with a menu that changes frequently. There are a range of vegetarian and vegan options available, as well as local ciders, beer and wine.

Brought to you by the masterminds behind Lake House (husband and wife team Allan and Alla Wolf-Tasker) this cafe in the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens is a great all-rounder, whatever the season or reason for your visit. On a more cheerful note, perhaps the cutest thing about Daylesford is that it was first named Wombat by the European settlers in the area. Whatever it’s called, this little town is all about pleasure so plan a weekend if you’re in Melbourne or include it on your Australia travel itinerary!

Go for a walk with your dog in the beautiful Wombat Hill Gardens and stop by at the Wombat Hill House for a coffee or lunch. If the walk somehow failed to make you forget the city life (which we highly doubt) the dog friendly garden seating area at the Wombat Hill house surely will.

Also, the brainchild of legend status, Alla Wolf Taska, is her more casual Wombat Hill House Café. Set in the old caretaker’s cottage in the Botanical Gardens, you can either snuggle in front of the open fire, dine in the kitchen garden or grab a picnic pack and go wombat watching.

The storybook-style mural at Wombat Hill House was painted by Allan Wolf-Tasker, husband of trailblazing restaurateur Alla Wolf-Tasker, who opened the acclaimed Lake House in the 1980s. The mural depicts creatures real and imagined in the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens.

Our adventure included the two hatted, AFR Australian Top 100 (no 30) Lake House, historic Daylesford Hotel, Tuki Trout Farm, cafes in Daylesford's Vincent Street, The Boathouse, Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens and Wombat Hill Cafe, and a short trip to Trentham.

2.00 p.m Lunch at wombat hill house, I don’t recommend this restaurant for its food, as the food was very average but the atmosphere is quiet nice and since we were visiting the gardens we decided to have lunch as well (Average $50 for 2 people)

Retail sales are available through Wombat Hill House, the Wolf-Tasker’s café nestled in the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, Daylesford. Regular sourdough baking classes are conducted on-site as an extension of the Lake House Cooking School program.

Situated in the heart of Daylesford, this cafe truly embraces the abundance of seasonal produce from the region. The food is delicious, fresh, and local. Their burger is particularly noteworthy, juicy & tasty with a generous serve of chips.

If all that exploring has worked up an appetite, head for the Wombat Hill House Cafe on site, the small house built in 1948 for the head gardener recently converted to a trendy cafe (more on this in our ‘where to eat’ section below!)

Daylesford is a town in the Wombat State Forest area north of the ridge of the Dividing Range. It is 90 km north-west of Melbourne and is on the Midland Highway between Castlemaine and Ballarat.

Join a cooking class or demonstration at the iconic Lake House Cooking School, where you can learn to create delicious dishes using fresh, local ingredients.

Also amazing: Wombat Hill House in the Botanic Gardens for salted caramel pastries and mushroom toasties from sister venue Dairy Flat Farm.

It was decided that we would head to the main lawn and setup there so we found a free table near Wombat Hill House.
