Coogee Common, Bread in Common’s younger sibling, occupies the historic Coogee Hotel site; built in 1894, it includes extensive grounds which are now put to good use as veggie gardens for both restaurants – and are home to a resident hive of bees. This connection to produce is reflected in their menu, which is tangibly seasonal – a lot of it is grown on the Common’s doorstep, after all. Scallop ceviche, raw turnip and coastal herbs is just one feature of the springtime menu, while mushroom tagliatelle with ricotta makes use of the garden’s greens.

A unique plot of land in the southern coastal suburbs of Perth creates a rare venue that’s 75 per cent market garden, 25 per cent delightfully revamped old pub. Great design and architecture bring it all together, while a contemporary Mediterranean menu makes clever use of site-grown produce. Elly is a gardener in Coogee Common’s permiculture farm-to-table garden. The garden was designed and created 4.5 years ago by the owners of The Common Group with the intention to grow food for the restaurant Bread In Common. They decided to refurbish the heritage building on the property and turn it into a restaurant and for the last 2 years the garden has served this restaurant primarily.

Coogee Common, located on the historic Coogee Hotel site, is a notable establishment known for its seasonal menu, which features dishes made from locally grown produce. Designed by Spaceagency Architects, Bread in Common and Coogee Common boast stunning interiors and intriguing menus. “Bread in Common is a bakery and dining space with deliciously moody interiors, housed in a heritage brick warehouse in Fremantle,” Hockin shares.

What I now know is Coogee Common has a garden surrounding the restaurant that provides much of what is utilised by the kitchen. There is certainly a bountiful array of fresh produce, and it is beautifully appointed in the creations of the chefs.
