They may have been brewing some of WA's favourite beers since 2004, but Gage Roads have only just opened up a public-facing brewhouse for all their frothheads to enjoy, and let us tell you, it's bloody beautiful. Overlooking the actual Gage Roads—the shipping lane between Fremantle and Rottnest Island that inspired the brand—the huge 1,500 capacity brewery, bar and restaurant has found its home in a converted 100-metre-long cargo shed originally built in 1926 that has ample space to explore. But honestly, we're most excited about the fresh frothies—with a 25-hectolitre, 16 tank brew-kit on site, beers will be pouring directly from tank to tap, so grab a fresh pint and take a seat outside to watch the container ships come in.

Taking up residence in Victoria Quay’s A Shed waterside in Fremantle, this place screams ultimate summer hang out while throwing back a few pints – that are all poured straight from tank to tap if I might add. Every section gives off big laidback Aussie beach vibes with sunny sessions in their front yard, sports on TV in the lounge or a good old dinner with mates in the dining room.

Entered here with zero consultation with others, and as a beer that in other formats has been around for years, I present Gage Roads' nitro'd take on their totally unfashionable Sleeping Giant English IPA that you can find on tap at their Freo home. It continues to slake as a softly-carbonated memory., with Gage Freo’s head brewer Simone Clements’ nitro treatment revealing this slumbering core range beer as a luscious, pintable, portside attendant. Nitro-crema ‘taches optional.

The four-piece have had a massive 18 months, touring nationally, supporting artists including Jungle Giants, The Jezebels and Ocean Alley, and releasing their single Cool Mind Blue. Originally from the South West, the now Perth-based outfit combines a range of influences to bring a subtle twist to their alternative-indie sound.

You could spend ages at Gage Roads not so much because of the food but because of the brilliant playground. It is deceptively simple, just a real car and a real boat, but a lot of thought must actually have been put into making it safe and user-friendly, because my 3-year-old and 1-year-old were able to play independently for hours with minimal supervision.

Less than a kilometre walk away is the state’s largest thirst trap, Gage Roads. The Australian-owned waterside brewery is housed in the historical B-shed with lofty red and white container cranes across the harbour. It’s a breath of fresh air enjoying a pint while watching cargo ships stacked with containers resembling colourful Lego blocks slowly pass by.
