What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Me Wah Restaurant is praised for its authentic Cantonese cuisine and high-end dining experience, with standouts like the ginger scallion lobster and skilled service. However, some reviews suggest a decline in food quality and inconsistent service, with a few diners experiencing disappointment with takeaway orders.
"One of the best ginger scallion lobster I’ve had - better than the ones I’ve tried in Sydney . The seasoning of the dishes were sublime and allowed the freshness of the seafood to shine . Staff were very attentive. Steamed scallops were also outstanding . Had another noodle dish which was very well flavoured ."

"Tucked away in the heart of the city, this Chinese restaurant delivers a rich and authentic experience with standout dishes that keep you coming back.
• Black Lamb Clay Pot: Deeply flavorful with tender chunks of lamb, slow-cooked to perfection. The sauce was rich, aromatic, and comforting—perfect with a bowl of steamed rice.
• Seafood Fried Rice: Light, fluffy, and loaded with fresh prawns, squid, and scallops. Each bite was balanced and not greasy—a rare find.
• Steamed Fish (Qing Yi): Absolutely perfectly cooked. The fish was flaky and moist, with a clean soy-ginger sauce that complemented rather than overpowered. A highlight.
• BBQ Platter: A well-balanced mix of char siu, roast duck, and crispy pork belly. Everything was juicy, flavorful, and expertly roasted, with crispy skin and tender meat.
Service was efficient and friendly, and the ambiance cozy yet elegant. Lost half a star only due to a short wait on a busy evening—but it was worth it."

"Efu noodles was done well. Seafood supreme was generally good (big pieces of prawn, fish and squid) except for the fact it was lacking in seasoning and scallops were quite small (got 3, 2 were the size of 20 cent including the roe and 3rd was slightly larger than a 10 cent coin including the roe). Had high expectations given the calibre of this restaurant and previous experience with Hobart and Launceston branch.
Maybe it was an off day. Staff member that served me was professional and helpful."

Top 10 Restaurants in Hobart TAS | Experience Oz
In an increasingly crowded market, it's getting harder and harder for Chinese restaurants to stand out, and for many potential diners the cuisine has something of an “eh” reputation in that, while it's quite easy to do average Chinese food, it's very hard to be truly good. Hobart's Me Wah Restaurant does just that however, largely due to the authenticity of the dishes on offer that's closer to what you'd actually find in Asia than their half-hearted attempts at reproduction many establishments peddle. The food at Me Wah is traditional, and the tastes it provides are simply excellent across the board, whether it's the variety of scrumptious yum cha / dumplings (literally dripping with flavour – take our advice: choose the scallop ones), or more in-depth fare such as lobster, wasabi-laced Wagyu Beef or even the duck pancakes (!).

Best dumplings in Tasmania
In a state with limited yum cha options, Me Wah is a blessing. Dumplings get the first-class treatment here: seafood siu mai are filled with blue swimmer crab, scallops and prawns then topped with caviar; the silkiest wontons swim in a fiery red broth under a veil of Sichuan pepper; and crisp-bottomed potstickers are plump with pork and cabbage. 16 Magnet Ct, Sandy Bay 39-41 Invermay Rd, Launceston; mewah.com.au.
