What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Restaurant Maria is celebrated for its exceptional fine dining experience, blending Mediterranean flavors with high-quality Tasmanian produce and impeccable service. Diners rave about standout dishes like the Bagna Cauda, Kingfish Crudo, and the Greek Yoghurt Panna Cotta, as well as the attentive staff and waterfront ambiance. Some guests noted that while appetizers and desserts shine, certain main courses, like the lamb shoulder, could be more innovative to match the overall high standard.
"What an amazing experience.
I love not having to think about what to order. Set menu, all set.
Our beautiful waitress designed a tailored drinks menu for us.
The chefs were so friendly and enthusiastic. Sharing their techniques and explaining every detail of the dishes they have so marvellously created.
The owner is so passionate about his Business and was happy to answer all of our curious questions.
This evening was truly amazing and will be something that I remember forever. Will.definitely be back when we next visit."

"We came to Restaurant Maria with pretty high expectations after seeing all the great reviews—and honestly, it mostly lived up to the hype. The vibe is kind of like relaxed fine dining—elegant but still super welcoming and unpretentious. The staff were lovely and made us feel really at ease.
We loved how the menu brings in local Tasmanian elements. The hummus and croquette dishes were absolute standouts—so much flavour and great textures, you can really tell there’s a lot of thought behind them.
The only reason it’s a 4-star for us is th
e main dish. We had the slow-cooked lamb shoulder, and while it was fine, it just didn’t have the same creativity or care as the rest of the meal. It felt a bit safe and a little boring compared to the other dishes.
Still, Maria definitely has all the ingredients of a top-tier restaurant. With a bit more attention to the mains, it could be something really special."

"We had very high expectations for Maria given the reviews and they were exceeded. In addition, the menu was food and flavours of the Mediterranean which is our kryptonite.
My partner had the standard menu and I had the pescatarian menu.
While everything on the menu truly hit the mark, the total rockstar dishes for us were the Bagna Cauda, Kingfish Crudo and Greek Yoghurt panna cotta. My partner said the 15 hour lamb was to die for.
The food, staff and atmosphere are exceptional.
The only reason I have given 4 stars for atmosphere was because it did get a little loud when a group arrived that made it difficult for my partner and I to hold a conversation. It wasn’t enough to spoil the overall experience and we will definitely return next time we’re in Hobart."

Dining — Braithwaite Hobart
With its rough-rendered archways and walls, 60s lounge music soundtrack and waterfront location, Restaurant Maria is a breath of fresh Mediterranean air in Hobart. Chef Christian Ryan (who also helms Aloft, just upstairs) has taken inspiration from dishes from Lisbon to Lebanon and made them uniquely Tasmanian with local produce including wild fennel, kunzea, sustainable seafood and locally made cheeses. Hit Kingston beach for a swim, stroll or paddle then take a window seat in the front bar and enjoy a pub meal with a view.
