Reviews Summary

Alfie's Italian garners praise for its delicious house-made pastas and creative snacks, with many highlighting the exceptional ragu and pizza bread. The attentive service also stands out in many reviews. However, some diners found the menu limited and the pricing high, with occasional complaints about dishes being too salty or overcooked.

"Fantastic cosy Italian restaurant. Food was delicious, from entree to main dish they served was well presented and morish. Thoroughly recommend it."

Zorika Oshiko

"We visited Alfie’s as a group of five, ordering the lamb ragu, pizza bread, and scallops. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the hype. While the customer service was genuinely lovely—the staff treated us beautifully, explained the menu thoroughly, and checked in frequently—the overall experience left much to be desired.

Firstly, the menu is quite limited, and surprisingly, they don’t offer pizzas despite being an Italian restaurant. The dishes are designed for sharing, which threw us off, as we hadn’t anticipated that. We checked the menu beforehand, and while it seemed promising, the reality fell short. The food itself was just okay—not amazing, especially for the price point. A major downside was how extremely salty each dish was, which overshadowed any potential flavor.

The atmosphere was average. Given the restaurant’s small size, it naturally gets loud with the crowd, and the addition of loud music made it overwhelming. It was difficult to have a conversation without raising our voices. On a positive note, the drinks were lovely.

Considering the high demand—booking took us a couple of weeks—and the buzz around the place, we expected much more. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the wait. For the price and the overall quality of the food and atmosphere, it didn’t meet expectations.

The real highlight was the customer service. The ladies serving us were wonderful and attentive, but sadly, that alone doesn’t justify the cost. For us, it’s a place we wouldn’t rush back to."

"We did the $80pp set menu for a wedding tasting + birthdays. The food was delicious and portions were very fair, we all left feeling full. Our server was amazing and very friendly!

Highlight for me was the chicken (so juicy), hazelnut tiramisu, polenta chips, and the dips at the beginning."

Newcastle's neighbourhoods are the new frontier of the city's food scene thanks to gems like Alfie's, tucked away in cool upcoming inner-west suburb New Lambton. This wildly popular neighbourhood wine bar flexes easily from snack and a glass to a full spread and a couple of bottles from the wine wall's floor-to-ceiling international cast. Whether you stack up little antipasto flavour bombs - think smoked mussels escabeche, Ortiz anchovies or truffle salami - or gather round heartier serves of mafaldini (the curly pasta) with beef cheek ragu, scallop spaghetti, pork cotoletta and more, you'll wish this was your local.alfiesitalian.com

Alfie's is a funky modern Italian restaurant in Newcastle's charming area of New Lambton, and while it's a newer addition it's fast become a local fave—we strongly suggest making a booking. Start with flame-kissed pizza bread (did someone say Totti's?) and add on antipasti like bocconcini with charred grapes and rosemary, smoked mussels in escabeche and whipped cod roe before moving on to house-made pastas with familiar but creative flavours like scallop with prosciutto XO, beef cheek ragu with speck, and caramelised local zucchini. Pair it all with a few spritzes or Italian wines, and you could be a long, long way from Newy.

I've always wanted something small and neighbourhood focused," says Ronnie Stricke, one of the 5 owners at Alfie's Italian in New Lambton. Located in a former fruit shop right next to the local post office, they serve up Italian antipasti and pastas with modern Australian style. While the name Alfie's Italian has Italian in the title, it skips effortlessly across continents.
